People keep talking about these deleted scenes...(Spoilers?)

I keep seeing people post about how the deleted scenes explain why the son is such a jerk to his mom, and show that Catherine is an angry, mean woman, etc. I can't form an exact opinion without seeing the scenes (and if anyone can direct me to somewhere I could view them, I'd appreciate it), but what I'm hearing is that the son had an affair and ran off with his teacher. Catherine called the police and put the affair to an end. This justifies the son's hatred and makes Catherine appear cold-hearted and evil in the eyes of the viewers.

Wait, what?

Her 16-year-old son runs away with his teacher. Isn't Catherine acting as a GOOD mother and a good person in calling the police? She's protecting her son because she loves him, and I can't imagine an instance in real life where a mother is just fine and dandy about their pubescent child living with a teacher.

I'm not discussing whether it's right or wrong to be with someone a decade older or younger than you, that's not the issue. The issue is that as his mother it is her duty to protect him until he is an adult, and that is exactly what she was doing.

Is there something in the scenes that I'm missing?

You can find the deleted scenes by searching in YouTube but basically your description in your first paragraph is correct. I don't think anyone here says that the incident "justifies the son's hatred and makes Catherine appear cold hearted and evil". They only say that it explains the son's hostility towards her, which is quite a different thing. In any case, I think this scene should have been included, since in the film we are told that the son had undergone therapy but are not told why.

The police would be after the piano teacher anyway for running away (and presumably having sex) with a minor. That was what happened to Winona Ryder in Boys.
