In my opinion, had he lived & was still around, He'd be up there with Pacino & DiNiro as one of the greatest actors of our generation (past 40 years). He was a great actor & there is no reason to think he would not have stayed great.

Definetly one of the greatest. Supporting actor/actress is a discipline of it's own, it does not mean the actor can't handle bigger roles; a lot of times I have found that the supporting part can be more demanding and difficult than the leading, especially in theater.
John Cazale was absolutely in the same league as the other actors from his generation, no question about it. Of course he was typecast, but that's what happens in movies and acting and why not give him the underdog, he did them so well.

every movie he was in was incredible and in every movie Cazale makes an impact and you remember him and his character. Little nuances of his acting. Guy was awesome!
His girl was Meryl Streep. Had he lived they may of had a few children.. imagine those genes combined the kind of actor they would have produced :)
