Evolution R Thoughts

No traffic here as of yet. But I finished watching this series and despite the Revolution/Evolution names for the series as they broke it up into two halves, I think this tv series as a whole is the second best, right behind Next.

I thought it was VERY creative and witty how "Nava" was introduced as a character of the Slayers TV universe without stepping on any copyright laws and we never actually get to see her true form.

Wow, doesn't seem like anyone comes to this board. Well I guess I will give my thoughts: **SPOILERS!!!***

I've been a fan of Slayers since the series came out on VHS in the late 90's in America, and it's one of the first Japanese anime that really got me into the art. I was absolutely estatic when they announced a fourth season was being produced since at the time we hadn't gotten anything besides Slayers Premium which I think came out in the early 2000's.

So my thoughts on Slayers Revolution and R.... well I will say first off that it's my least favorite of the four seasons. Not to say that it's bad, but there were a number of problems I had with it. The first half, or Slayers Revolution seems much less exciting, less funny and over all less entertaining then the second. Now this kind of happens in other seasons where the second half usually brings the bigger baddies and storyline into place, but with the original, Next and Try, I found all of the first halve's of those to still be fun to watch.

Lina in the first 13 episodes seems to be just pissed off about everything, and really unlikable. Don't get me wrong, she is angry or greedy plenty of times in the other seasons, but in this one they seem to go out of their way to make her really nasty to her friends and companions. The other thing that bothered me was the fact that they never explained how Pokota could actually make a replica of the sword of light. I don't hate the fact that it's back, I just wish that they could have explained it in more detail on how he could invent such a thing. With that in mind, I don't really hate Pokota as a character as Revolution R really gave him the rest of his storyline, but he is still by far my least favorite sidekick compared to the likes of Filia and Sylphiel.

Another issue seemed to be that Gourry got the short end of the stick again in this one. He lost his sword in Try, and while he didn't get as much time in the spotlight as the other guys/girls, he still had some great scenes through out that season. In Revolution/R, there are very few witty comments from him, either funny or observant, and without the sword of light half the time he just seemed lost. The only other thing I didn't care for much was the fact that they kind of swept Zelgadis' quest under the rug after such an awesome episode in Slayers Revolution R with more detailed info on his past and what Rezo did to him. I thought we would get more screen time about it in the last episode at least.

What did I like about Slayers Revoultion and R? I loved the animation, and while it's not my favorite art style (I like the original looks of the characters from the first three seasons) the colors are very vibrant this time around and the spells like amazing. The opening and endings are great, and I love how they used a lot of BGM's from the first three. I also enjoyed the second half of the season with trying to obtain the Hell Master jar, and while I didn't think the filler episodes in the first half (like the pet napper and the ball town) were that funny, the ones in the second (ghost knights, Amelia and Nama) where pretty cute.

The last battle with the soul of shabraningdo was cool, and I love the song at the end and the way they did the credits; reminded me of the Slayers Try ending a bit. I would say if I had to pick a favorite episode in Revolution/R it would be either Zel's one where we get to peek into his past more, and his conflict with the soul of Rezo, or the last episode with the great battle and special effects.

Sorry my post went on for so long, hopefully this was interesting to read for any Slayers fans. I would love to hear anyone elses opinion on what they thought as well. And even though this was my least favorite season of the series, I am still very greatful we even got another Slayers series! :)

Slayers forever!
