My Interpretation.....SP OILER ALERT

At the beginning of the film we see the abused son escaping the basement chamber and running through the woods being chased by Monster Mommy. At this time we see Peter's parents die in a firey car crash. I think the mother killed her son by tossing him over the falls, however made it appear that it was Peter by leaving the shoe. Mother then keeps Peter locked in the same basement chamber for many years as her replacement son. I gathered that Peter and his family were travelling and the hotel was their last stop before the crash. This explains peter's entry in the hotel guest book, the family photo, and why he chooses to go back to the hotel to stay. I think the woman at the hotel is the same lady in the photograph, which is the ghost of his dead mother. When he's talking to "Peter" in the woods and he says something to the effect of, I know what happened to you. He is aware of the abuse the son was subjected to by the hands of his mother, which ultimately led to his escape and death. Peter had the same experience so he was "walking in dead man's shoes" and the two boy's experience cross over each other. At the end we see the red hoodied reflection of Peter in the camera so we know he is the killer. To sum it up. The son died made to look like the missing boy. The missing boy, Peter was holed up in the basement by the mother, Peter went crazy and killed a few people. As for Sara, she had sympathy for Peter because of everything he had endured.

That's essentially what I thought too. Came here to see if anyone else thought that. I found it really creepy and like that the plot wasn't spoon-fed to us. You really had to pay attention to subtlety!

I think this is right one. Simple explanation if you ask me. Other peoples opinions seem to be to twisty implausible.

According to your explanation, then who is KK?

reply

It's been a while since I've seen this, but if I remember correctly KK is Peter. In the beginning the mother's son Peter dies. The mother kidnaps KK and keeps him as her son, "Peter #2". KK later escapes (the same way Peter #1 did). KK then returns to the town, years later, traumatized and begins killing as "Peter". He goes back and forth, lucid and non lucid, as KK and "Peter".
Think Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

I just saw this. But the above explanation leaves something out.

who's the guy in cell anyway? kk or peter? this was the mistake.
mist have been left clear.

KK returns to town after his real mother dies.
(he was supposedly far and away before and he made money: the bmw).
is this a true fact? I guess it is.

some homicide happened also before his return to the town.
is this a fact? I guess it is.
who committed these? I think not KK (who seems to be just returned) but peter (or maybe kk mother?).

So the kids where exchanged.
the same night KK escaped from the basement, he met peter that had just suffered the car accident.
kk escapes and kk mother keeps peter (in stead of kk) in the basement and tortured him all along.

is this a true fact? I guess it is.

at the end, we see KK surrender out of the blame he feels for leaving the other kid in the hand of his mother and (we do not see this but) simultaneusly the police arrests peter.
who knows?

This is just my take on the story, but it's pretty close to yours.

The real KK was killed by his crazy mom. She then comes across blonde Peter while he was taking a pee. When his parents got killed, she pretends to offer help, but actually kidnaps him. She then renames him Kai and raises him as her son, while alternately torturing him. The whole scene of KK witnessing the death of Peter's parents is just a flashback. He is really reliving the death of his parents and his abduction by KK's mom.

The end where he sees Peter die, he is mentally killing off that part of him that became just as evil and warped as his mother. It's all in his head, the death of Peter. He stopped being that innocent boy years ago, but in his mind there was still a fight going on as to who he really was, KK or Peter. I thought it was explained when he came back. Maybe it was that lingering part of his past he needed to get rid off, just as he needed to have the mom and house burned and destroyed, he needed to kill off the last mental renmants of Peter that still haunted him.

For years he was able to somewhat bury inside of him those moments of being tortured and live within society. Yet when he returned home, they fully resurfaced along with violent behavior. Just as the real KK was freed from the horrors of being tortured when he died as a child, the adult Peter can also be freed by dying.

Of course whoever he considers himself to be at the end is a mystery since KK physically died, while Peter emotionally and mentally died.

Very similar interpretations. I don't remember all the detais and now I have the names mixed up....I thought the first boy was Peter and the kidnapped kid was Kai. Oh well, you know what I mean.

I just believe the first boy we see is killed by his mother after he escapes the basement. The boy travelling with his parents is kidnapped and locked in the basement to endure the same torture. We assume he escapes many years later, because he comes back to visit the town as an adult.
