So, did Michael get together with Lena? She called him and left a message but it just ended with him walking on the beach and not calling her back. I understand about seeing his wife on the bed and then crying, just not what happened between Lena and Michael.

I assumed since his wife came and consoled him, he was really to move on with his life. This life included Lena, who called him after this. I assumed he would start seeing her. She also was going to help him with his writing career. Sounds like his life was going down the right path at the end of it.
I remember a conversation earlier in the film where I think Lena is talking about people coming back to say goodbye and in doing so, the pain is lessened and everyone then is at peace. I am not sure how it is worded, but it had a vibe like that.
I don't think Michael got together with Lena. She was only in town a few days for the writers' conference. She was attracted to him, but realized he was still grieving the death of his wife. Her message was a definite goodbye, with a half-hearted invitation to visit her if he was ever in London. She did one good thing for Michael; showing his stories to her publisher friend. I took it to mean that they would eventually be published.
shareI think that Michael eventually got together with Lena. She knew that he still needed time and space to come to terms with his wife's death. This is one reason she wasn't as aggressive on the phone about him coming to visit her as she wanted to be. She was the catalyst that got him to the stage of accepting his wife's death and beginning to move on, but he still needed some time.
Making too much of a point, at the end, of Michael getting together with Lena would have taken away from how the movie was expressing Michael's reactions to the death of his wife.....It seems very clear to me that Michael and Lena were headed in the direction of a relationship as soon as the time was right.
