So let me just make one thing clear up front: Aidan Turner *is* my type, so any scenes involving him and "bonking" don't bother me in the least.
That being said, I'm no prude either, but I do tend to think in general that gratuitous sex scenes in movies/TV tend to be a cheap and easy way to sensationalize something plain and unable to engage the interest.
Now THAT being said, I don't think that's the case here (in my opinion). For me, the sex/nude scenes accomplish a couple of things: 1) they show realistically a certain segment of the population and 2) they provide a sharp and telling contrast to the stringent mores of society at the time. So for me, they were supposed to be over-the-top as part of their decadent artist bohemian lifestyle (rather like rockstars and groupies today)...and it highlights just how revolutionary they were for the times...when you compare it to the scenes in "polite" society in which sexuality is so restrained.
So, in sum, I think that in this case they serve a real purpose and, once you get over the surprise of it a bit, informs about the Brotherhood and their lifestyle...but I'm not "right" of course, that's just my opinion. :)
