Was there any worry or doubt about Anne Hathaway playing Catwoman?

I guess because Anne Hathaway (despite being an Oscar winner down the line) always had a decidedly wholesome, "good girl" image. In other words, it's hard to immediately buy her as a sexy, dangerous vamp like Catwoman. It's kind of like when Jennifer Garner was cast as Elektra even though like Anne Hathaway, she in real life is known for being the nice, girl next door.

Anne Hathaway lost that good girl image after Havoc(2005). Not judging her but onces you've seen a woman topless you just don't see her the same way again.

I definitely remember there being flak over her casting (admittedly, I myself wasn’t too thrilled by it), but looking back idk if things ever got THAT bad considering there were enough fans defending this casting. Anne was getting the good ol’ Heath Ledger benefit of the doubt... “well everyone said that Legder was 100% the wrong choice for the Joker and look how that turned out.” Boy, did that defense get old real quick! XD

Her former “good girl” image? While this did bother some, I actually recall a number of people saying Anne simply didn’t have the LOOKS for Selena Kyle. In other words, she ain’t hot enough... lol. Anyhow, while I remain hesitant to say Anne completely owned the role a la Michelle Pfeiffer, she was well-casted.

I thought she sucked in the role...

yes I was on The IMDB boards when Hathaway was cast....

It was pretty unanimous that she wasn't right for the role....

But like always with controversial casting The Theme became "Oh Ya, everybody said Heath Ledger was a terrible casting choice, Howd that work out"

In The end, I think most were happy with her in the role....but on The boards it was probably something like 70/30 Negative, with only Hardcore DC fans and Nolan fans defending the casting when it was announced...

It wasnt near as bad as when Ben Affleck was Announced as Batman....

Or Gadot as Wonder Woman

Or Eisenberg as Luthor

I swear to god that was like 95/5 horrible casting....

I literally thought DC fans was going to get "Oh Ya, everybody said Heath Ledger was a terrible casting choice, Howd that work out" tattooed on their faces because I swear that because Their Mantra

I gotta admit I was worried but fortunately Nolan proved me wrong.

I like Hathaway as an actress, but she was not right for the role of Catwoman.

All you have to do is watch her performance and interpretation of the character back-to-back with Michelle Pfieffer's and it's pretty obvious that Pfieffer blows her away.

reply

Yep.

Pfieffer was 200% hotter than Hathaway. Crazy and sexy, which is not an easy thing to pull off.

The only actress I think could have done Catwoman justice in a complex and layered role with what material she had to work with in Nolan's TDKR is Charlize Theron. She comes across to me as a real-life b!tch, and she would have been perfect for the role of Catwoman; a complex, needy, selfish, lonely, yearning, sexy woman who needs to be tamed by the Bat.

I am not at all a fan of Batman Returns, but the scene in the apartment where Michelle transforms into Catwoman is brilliant and should be studied in film schools. It's a great scene that alone makes the film worth the price of admission and Pfeiffer is fucking AMAZING.

Theron is an interesting choice. I'm not sure she's right for the part, but I'd be interested to see it. A younger Nicole Kidman could also be interesting. Who else? Perhaps a young Sharon Stone or Jennifer Jason Leigh.

Too bad we don't have some reality manipulator that would allow us to put all of these ladies in Batman Returns and see how they stack up.

reply

Oh wow, Sharon Stone is a perfect choice. She's so sultry and seductive, yet she has that venomous streak to her.

A younger Sharon Stone I think would have been perfect. Maybe Demi Moore? I don't know, though, she has somewhat of a domestic quality about her, and while she was smoking hot (and still is) she didn't seem to possess the kind of selfish neediness that helps define Catwoman.

Jennifer Jason Leigh is another interesting choice, but I kind of feel like she doesn't have enough bite to her. How about a young Geena-Lee Davis? I feel like she might be a bit too bourgeois for something like Catwoman, though.

reply

You may be right about Jennifer Jason Leigh. I was mostly thinking back to Single White Female, where she not only looked great but also showed that she could do crazy. That's a really good film BTW.

Demi Moore is a maybe. I'd be interested to see it but she would need to bring her acting skills and show that she could transform herself and handle a role that's outside of her wheelhouse.

Geena Davis doesn't seem right to me, neither the right look nor the right, I dunno, energy I guess. But I'll take this opportunity to mention that she was in a great action movie in the 90s that hasn't gotten the credit it deserves: The Long Kiss Goodnight. If you haven't seen it, you should check it out.

Heh, that's precisely why I thought of Geena Davis. I love that film.

You know who might have been a sleeper-hit of a choice for Catwoman? One of my personal favorites: Sophie Marceau. She has that definitive femme fatale quality about her, but her enigmatic gestures and mannerisms would probably be better suited for Talia instead of Catwoman.

Rebecca Romijin Stamos might have been an interesting pick, though. I thought she was great as Mystique, and really did capture the femme fatale elements of the character, despite her limited screen-time in the X-Men movies.

Christopher Nolan can't write or direct for women so no one ever had any reason to care who it was.

Before this movie came out I was so hyped. I thought it was going to be fantastic. My only worry was about Hathaway. I really thought she was a bad choice. Turned out that she was the only thing that I liked in the movie.
Similarly, Pfeiffer was the only thing about that wretched B2 that I liked. The two movies are very close to each other in overall idiocy.
