Is this the worst 'number three' entry EVER in CBM history?

Since the obvious and growing consensus looking back over time finds most people really hating this movie and being severely let down by it I think it's now a fair question. Is this the worst #3 movie ever in CBM history?

Yes, all-time.

It's bad, we can all agree on that but is it judged even more harshly because it followed a good second movie in the trilogy? The same thing seems to happen with Spider-Man 3 and SM3 is nowhere near as bad as TDKR.

Is this really worse than the awful X3, Superman III or Batman Forever???

reply

I think beyond this board you are going to have a very hard time convincing anyone that it is.

SM3 is a million times worse than TDKR. A million.

TDKR is not a bad film, it's comparable to the first film of the trilogy, Batman Begins.

I actually think it's just slightly better than TDK.

That was a joke, right? At least in Begins Nolan tried. In TDKR he just phoned it in. That is why it is filled with stupidity, mistakes, plot holes and bad film-making.

reply

And this is proof that retards indeed know how to type... it is comparable to Begins in the same way a Porsche is comparable to a VW Beetle.... idiot.

reply

It's up there on the list. Superman 3 and Batman Forever were pretty cr&ppy, but they also went for the camp. Spider Man 3, Iron Man 3 and X-Men 3 all suffered from the same, "Hey, it's the 3rd movie so lets throw as much stuff into it as we possibly can!" mentality that a lot of 3rd movies do.

The Dull Knight Rests was a stupidity, mistake, and bad film-making filled snoozefest.

reply

Nah that's going a bit far. As disappointing as TDKR was, Spiderman 3 and Batman Forever are both worse. I'd even say Iron Man 3 was worse.

reply

Superman III: Not a great film but it seems to have gotten better with age, it had a different love interest, the smallville roots were nice as was a different villain than Lex Luthor and Reeve shows off his acting skills the best here
Batman Forever: probably the most controversial. I still maintain this film would be far better regarded had Batman and Robin never happened. Unfortunately people see this one as the bridge to that film. It’s still miles better than TDKR
Blade trinity; awful film but what do you expect when they let David Goyer DIRECT?
X3; never saw it
Spider-man 3: is also being viewed as not as bad 10 years later. At the time people were angry Venom was killed off but since it concluded the series, many people are happy we got a bit of Venom vs none.
Iron Man 3; I’ve only seen it once, wasn’t awful but wasn’t great. They clearly tried to Nolanize Iron Man making it dark and depressing and even not having Iron Man for most of the film.
Captain America civil war; here is the greatest comic based 3rd entry folks. It did what Nolan only dreamed of; making a dark gritty film still entertaining.

as far as drop offs from a 2nd film to 3rd, not counting direct to video or animated sequels, the dark knight series easily drops off the most

I can see why people would think Civil War is the best 3rd installment in a trilogy, but I disagree and still think TDKR is so much more ambitious and impressive as a movie.

Also I wouldn't describe CW as dark or gritty. It's more serious than the typical Marvel film, but still not dark or gritty. It never approaches the depths of despair and latter hopefulness as TDKR does as for example when Bane beats Batman and when Bruce climbs out of the pit.

Just as one example. CW is still very much a fun comic book movie, TDKR continues the tradition of the previous films as being something more than what you would expect from the genre.

I'd actually say it ends up being something less than you'd expect from the genre.

Well even Steven Spielberg said it was incredible.

Steven Spielberg thinks that superhero films are crap and that the genre is going to die out soon. So, him trying to be a nice guy and praise TDKR says a lot doesn't it?

reply

I think that makes his TDKR comments even more meaningful then.

reply

No it doesn’t. Needless to say Speilberg is heavily respected in the film community but it fits the pattern that a non-comic book fan praises the dark knight films.

reply

Everyone praises the dark knight trilogy.

Anyway that's a sign of a good comic book movie, that it can be appreciated by non-comic book fans and stand on its own as a great movie.

YOU sir are exactly what is wrong with so called "fans" and critics
You know if you get a movie that is different from what you EXPECTED AND WANTED TO SEE...you completely ignore everything in that movie and tear it apart...because it dissapointed you...of course it´s your opinion...but if there is even one tiny thing yo dont like you hate it

reply

Basically the haters wanted more batsuit scenes and wanted Bruce to decide in the end that he can be both Bruce Wayne and Batman and will continue to defend Gotham for the rest of his life (as if we haven't seen that before).

reply

THAT´S EXACTLY IT! YOU GOT IT!
That´s what they want...Myself and from your reaction I think I can say you as well..I go the movies with an open mind ready to be surprised and entertained...but these "fans" don´t they want the same...because if there´s something "different" then there is "WORST MOVIE EVER!" PHASE.
Look I don´t give a sh*** about some stupid fans but sometimes these reactions can hurt movies I love and they´ll just end...
Tbh I watched the whole trilogy recently And I think all three movies are very solid...
But the Dark Knight Rises has the most adreline filled opening...that airplane scene is just COOL!

reply

What I love about the Nolan trilogy is that he did something different with each one. Batman Begins felt like a detective/mystery movie and seemed to feel a lot like Blade Runner, The Dark Knight was a crime thriller like Heat and The Dark Knight Rises reminded me a lot of a war movie along the lines of Braveheart. Unfortunately a lot of these pathetic trolls just want the same old sh!t and don't understand the brilliance of what Nolan did.

reply

I feel that TDKR is apart from the first two...
but there was a bigger time gap between the two...
It was even more fantastic in a way...more comic booky...

Batman Begins still remains my 1...maybe because I saw that one the most times
I saw TDK only 3 times now because I just don´t want to binge on that movie because it´s so special.

But I know if Heath didn´t pass away TDKR would be very very different...I mean DUH that´s just me stating the obvious...

What I missed in TDKR? Joker of course...But this movie is "hated" because that...and that is the most ridiculous reason to hate on a movie. I mean you don´t get more disrespectful than that.

It´s still the best CB trilogy ever made...even though these are just very serious movies as you said,1) detective mystery thriller; 2 psychological crime thriller; 3) imo very strong anti-terrorist movie maybe that adds to the "controversy" Bane became a cult villain after that too...thanks to that voice nonetheless...it´s iconic and strange in the best way possible
Batman just happens to be the main hero 

And these movies are SO good that you don´t hear complaints about these movies not be true t the comic book...which is the most frequent trendy complaint these days...well post Marvel days 

Oh get over yourself you tosser. TDKR could have been great, I had no problem with the idea of a war movie. I had a problem with its sloppy writing and awful pacing.

Not really, IMO.

I honestly wonder if the dark knight rises was basically just meant to spoof the Adam West movies with the bad fight scenes and getting rid of a bomb sequence.

reply

Indeed. The Crow: Salvation is actually pretty decent, from what I remember...

reply

is that the one with Kirsten Dunst where a man is wrongfully executed for murdering his girlfriend and comes back for revenge? If so that was fairly decent.

reply

Yep. It was decent, also very stylish, with that anachronistic noir setting, and the final twist, although predictable, made the Resident Evil fan in me cheer. Not a masterpiece, not even better than the first one, I'd say, but still pretty decent. The director would eventually work on Life On Mars, the original British version, with the pilot episode featuring some of my all time favorite TV moments, like the protagonist regaining consciousness in the 70s to the sound of Bowie's Life On Mars. Great stuff!

reply

that's what I heard too; decent movie though not as good as the first. I saw the second film and it was horrendous. So much for the stupid thesis of this thread that third films can't be better than second films.

reply

The second one has one thing going for it, though, it looks amazing! Of course it leaves a lot to be desired in pretty much every other way, but the fact that the studio cut some 30, 45 minutes and rearranged what remained in order to mimic the first one's plot and its structure, that really didn't help...

So much for the stupid thesis of this thread that third films can't be better than second films.

A Nightmare on Elm Street says hello. And Die Hard. And... many others, that doesn't even make any sense...!

reply

the Nolanites grasp at every straw they can to explain why people hate this movie, one is that people simply hate it for being the third film in the series 'just because' instead of facing the reality that it's possible their saviour could make a film that not everybody likes.

reply

No we don't have to grasp at straws there are many reasons why TDKR is a masterpiece, it's just sad and pathetic that this really idiotic group of haters has to invent things to bitch about. Seriously dude get a life and appreciate Nolan's genius.

reply

I do agree Crow: Salvation is more entertaining, but brought it up because it's not considered very good. Can't agree at all about TMNT III.
