Steve and the lack thereof

What was the point of even HAVING Steve? They should have just stuck him in the box with Cilla's mother, father, stepmom, stepsister, Ford's mom, dad, granddad and the real house. He comes, he gets hit and stuck in a hospital and that's it? She wasn't even all that upset. She was freaking socializing in the waiting room, smiling inappropriately and making business contacts. Where was the angst of "my best friend could die"?

And in a totally unrelated note..those drawings didn't look anything like her...
