There is an obvious gesture of Lisbeth placing something into her mouth as she sets out for the Brickworks. Later before she enters the building she removes it.
Looks to be a piece of paper, gum, drug? I can find no reference to this in the book but bothering to give it two bits of film means it must carry some meaning..
Lisbeth is sometimes, when there's no place for her to smoke, using "snus" i.e snuff. You can get it in a package with small bags which you put under your upper lip.

If I'm not wrong Monica Figuerola is also using snuff but some strange Eucalyptus flavoured Catch Dry snuff.
Snus is, to the best of my knowledge, more or less unique to Scandinavia, and I am really looking forward to see how they will handle the issue if the Americans decide to make a sequel to their own version of "TGWTDT".

That is probably true, but everyone (except maybe some people from Third World countries we don't care about) can relate to snacking on a candy bar, irrespective of the label - which is not so much the case with snus.

That's absolutely true, maybe the comparision wasn't that great but I'd guess the Americans have to deal with it or they'll chicken out, as in not have to explain it and skip the snus, who knows? Or maybe they just don't wanna the Americans begin to "snusa", yet another nicotine habit?
shareThere are american smokeless tobacco products including snuff and snus (are they the same thing?). Even still, I'd hardly call it chickening out if it wasn't included in an american version; from what I can find, she only uses it once in the book. Plus, I think a lot of people would be like me when watching the swedish movie, and ask themselves why she brought her retainer to check on an abandoned building.

Snus is not the dry thing refered in what I quoted above, it's more like dark/black kinda goo if it's not packed in those small bags which you can see in my first post from Wiki. Snus contains more nicotine than cigarettes infact and many people who are trying to quit smoking begins to "snusa" instead which makes it even harder to quit. But it doesn't contains tars and all the other chemicals so from that perspective it's better to "snusa".
As for 'chicken out', it was just a thing that came to mind as so many posters on the DT board complained about the smoking. You have to remind me about the retainer...?
There's nothing to be reminded of. It's just that I'm not familiar with snus, so when I saw Lisbeth take it out of her mouth, I thought it must have been some kind of retainer or invisible braces.

But now that i know what snus is.... In an American version they would just have her chew some nicotine gum... or smoke one of those e-cigarettes. - no biggie.
