One thing that this film got right, or at least righter than the 1974 version...

The dull 1974 version was on a local station today, and it made me realize that this version got one thing right: In the 1974 version Nick seems perturbed by Gatsby and seems to get sucked into his personal drama against his better judgement, in the 2013 version Nick seems absolutely besotted with Gatsby!

Nick should be dazzled by Gatsby. The whole story is about falling in love with illusions, and if Nick isn't impressed with the illusions Gatsby wraps around himself, then Nick has no real place in the story and everything lacks emotional impact.
