My problem

My problem with this film isn't the casting, or the writing, or the modern music, or the representation of Fitzgerald's story. My problem is with the directing, specifically the VFX. Why so much? Isn't it enough to make real footage on NYC look really, really, good (and period-accurate) than make it look like a reused landscape from Attack of the Clones? Do we need the VFX driving shots and fake-looking Valley of Ashes set? Was it really a good idea to make a CGI bay and a really bad-looking VFX green light? Aside from that, the directing was just too frenetic. I love the fast pace, but you can't make everything fast and nothing slow at all or else our characters can easily become underdeveloped.

i had no issue with the technical aspects of the film, except for the poor choice of soundtrack. it was the script that annoyed me. if i hadn't seen it in 3d i guess i would have never made it to the end.

I don't necessary agree with the directing choice, but it is logical in the same sense that the music is logical. It is meant to be larger than life, and Baz Luhrmann seems to have taken that idea to the max, in whatever ways he could - up to and including special effects that do not necessarily make sense in the context of the story.
