Alternate Ending

I've just got one thing to say. The theater version showed the uncut version, which I saw. I was disappointed to see the ending snipped on the DVD. The original ending was much more affecting. Many scenes were cut including the father viewing his dead son and Nick later bumping into Tom. These parts coalesced the ending in a more dramatic and clearer way.

Just my feeling at the moment which is subject to change. I got the DVD for Christmas and watched it Christmas Eve which was last night. The other ending was very memorable to me.

Are you talking about the 1974 version?

reply

No, the 2013 version. The theater showed a different ending than the DVD.

The cut parts can be found on YouTube.

I saw the 2013 version in theaters and I don't remember Nick running into Tom after Gatsby's death.

I remember it vividly. Watch the youtube and you will see that the director says that it was left in for a long time. I don't know how long.

The director said these scenes were never in the theatrical version

I just checked that YouTube clip, and the director doesn't say anything of the sort. I saw all those scenes in the theater. He did say that they weren't in the book.

I read the book for the first time after I had already seen the movie. The movie was almost identical to the book. I, at this time, still think he should have left them in. But, I guess, it didn't work to his view.

Thanks for the link. I've never seen this ending before, and I loved it.

I saw the movie 3 times in the theater and I never saw those scenes in the theater. Not long before the DVD came out, Baz released the deleted scenes online and in the extra features on the DVD & Blu-Ray. But those scenes have never been included in the finished version of the 2013 film.

Hi beforesunset83,

I'm a year late, but I too saw the film in the theater. I never saw those scenes.

Well, so far it looks like I am making it up. But I assure you, all those scenes were in the movie. The director says that they were left in for a long time. Interesting to find out so many people missed them. When I saw the DVD, I was shocked that they were gone.

On the DVD the Director states clearly that they were in for a long time but ultimately cut.
