I wanted this to be good;instead it pretty BAD.

Argh, was really hoping for a really well made horror movie centered around black people. I can tell their hearts were in the right place. They have a decent cast here, but never really play up to the sexiness of the actors, especially with fine Rochelle. For the others you never get to know them enough to care about what happens to them. You can also tell that they really wanted to have a good back story and probably took alot of time to develop it, yet it comes off extremely murky and dare I say....boring. Way too much exposition early on without moving forward the plot.

To top it off, THERE IS NO REAL ATMOSPHERE! Everything feels so random. There are NO truly scary moments, just stupid flashes, random blood on the windows for NO reason, etc. Its like someone watched The Shining and tried to cover some of those motifs only they forgot the ambiance. At its essence, this is just an empty feeling movie.

Oh, and we dont even see the kills! Everything is off screen! I know that could be a budget issue, but it just comes off wack. Lastly it just turned out to be badly directed, mismanaged and horribly written. Not to mention it is in SERIOUS need of a good editor to chop this baby down a good 20 minutes. its running time is 1:24, coming in waaay too long. The first 20 minutes especially need some work, as well as the damn flashbacks. I mean, its like we dont really get moving til like the 35 min mark. thats a no no. Move it along people. The movie is just not good. At all.

Id give it a 1/5. Super snooze fest.Feels much longer than it is. Sorry for anyone from the production reading this. Oh yea, forgot to say that Keith David does his thing as a crazy guy, but even then....the director doesnt seem to know how to harness the right performance from him and the others.

When I heard about this I thought, "oh, a horror flick with a black cast. haven't seen too many of those. maybe it'll be good."

Nope. Not a chance.

I get it. They tried to make it distinctly "black" by including slavery, African tribes, voodoo and the characters getting high (really? did we need that?), but it all falls flat. The movie is only 1h 25m long and it takes almost 40 minutes to get into the story. All the characters except for Golden Brooks are completely annoying (especially DB Woodside).

The more horror movies I watch the more I realize, no matter how good or bad the script is, a horror movie can succeed with a really good director. Well, the direction AND the script are both awful in this case. Sigh.

Don't try to cash in love, that check will always bounce.

I agree. The slavery/voodoo angle just made it worse. Hopefully we'll get a better product with the next horror film with a predominantly black cast.

Sorry. Golden Brooke's character was annoying too. I couldn't stand her.

I can agree with some of your points, but I ultimately didn't find it as bad as you did. It started as a 5 or 6, but I ultimately rated it a 4. It fell apart in the last half hour and the "twist" ending was way too abrupt. It left too many unanswered questions and I didn't feel satisfied with what I just saw.

I thought they had some decent actors and the filmmakers at least tried to make use of the tight budget, so good for them. I also thought that there was somewhat of a decent story in there, despite being poorly executed and a bit incoherent. The characters also weren't stereotypical gangster folk you'd expect in a film like this, so kudos for delivering some competent middle-class individuals (at least until the last half hour when all the obligatory "motherf-ckers!" begin being dropped constantly lol).

Worst parts of the film were the utterly pointless white characters (get naked and die?), the poor CGI and the fact that the violence is VERY tame and all the deaths are off-screen. The UNRATED tag surely must be for the sex scene and the constant "motherf-cker" lines. But yeah, there's worse out there overall. I think a 2.6 on this site is harsh...but oh well.

You're either playing dumb, or it's not an act.

This had to be the WORST movie I've ever seen in my life. I fell asleep at least three times and every time I'd wake up the scenes were just horrific. I don't know whose idea this concept was but it was far from horror and totally stupid.

I agree with your points, OP. I started to watch this movie a few days ago, because the cover art drew me in, and I figured I would give the movie a try just based on the that. I didn't even know the premise of the movie when I started to watch it. I watched for about half an hour and then turned it off. I think you hit the nail on the head when you said the movie didn't have a real atmosphere and that a lot of the scenes felt random and thrown together. Before attempting to watch this movie, I had watched Nite Tales, the movie, that also had a mostly black cast, and the movie was overall decent horror even if the story-lines were predictable.
