Um, why no subtitles????

80% of the film is in Polish, yet there are no subtitles??

Why?

Because part of the terror was being trapped in the hands of people whose language the three captives did not understand. Were it being translated for the audience, we could not share/empathize in that aspect of the ordeal.

Had we been able to understand the Poles, it would have telegraphed what the whole thing was about from the beginning. We weren't intended to get it until the end.

Exactly what the above poster said. I'm guessing the OP didn't finish the movie? It is crucial for the viewer to be as lost as the americans where regarding the conversation of the natives.

It's quite true that the lack of subtitles keeps us in the dark as much as the characters are. But what if a person watching this film understands the Polish language? I wonder if the dialogue in Polish gave away any secrets or kept the ultimate good intention of the secret sect performing sacrifices.
