Poor Ricki....

He never did get Irina back of course. It’s sad because he really liked her, maybe loved. Do you think when Smiley told him “I’ll do my utmost Ricki” that he knew beforehand that she was dead? Possibly from Prideaux? But Jim couldn’t have known who she was & it would be a stretch to say Smiley deduced who she was (if he was interested that is) from what Jim may have told him.

Just curious to see what you all think.

I have the same question. I think Smiley knew she was doomed to die as soon as Ricki said she was abducted and sent back to Russia. She got caught trying to trade the “mother of all secrets” to head of the Circus. Smiley probably deduced that the woman executed in front of Prideaux was Irina, kept alive just long enough to investigate the scope of her betrayal. Ricki was naive and careless. He stumbled into something that was way above his pay grade.

Ricky was an assassin and an asset. No Pity required. He had his fun with Irina (a married woman) and is doing his job as ordered, same as most other people.

A bit harsh but very true.
