Bad script or bad casting? What was it's down fall

I think the script was eh but the casting choices were horrible

reply

Both, but casting was worse...

reply

Both. This movie was a mess from top to bottom. Kinda like a competition to see who could embarrass themselves the most.

reply

Same.

Casting Emilia Clarke as Sarah Connor was a bad idea, Jai Courtney ruins everything he touches, the plot was another rehash of sending Terminators back to stop other Terminators, and the fact that Skynet was an app just shows there's no more originality left in the writing room.

On the other hand, I still prefer it over Terminator Salvation (2009).

Direction, then script. Quite a brave attempt to tangle-untangle up all the timelines but the end result was bland and predicable. Not 100% convinced about the casting but I don't believe they could have done anything to lift the film.

reply

What's brave about it? The TV series explored this angle in depth and much better.
Actually the movie "borrowed" from the Chronicles a lot.

reply

Brave in the sense that previous film scripts and directors jumped all over the place just to keep the franchise running and trying to pull the threads together took some effort. But you're correct, I'm ignoring the TV series - which personally I liked.

reply

Script. I thought the casting was OK, but the script and direction just didn't work and they keep trying to replicate the story of the first two which has become repetitive. It's practically the same movie every time now. Salvation wasn't great by any means, but at least they tried to do something different instead of terminator sent back in time to save someone.

Script was bad. There was really nothing about Sarah and Kyle that any other actors could have elevated. The material just wasn't there. My problem with Jai Courtney is the fact that he is this 6"2 guy who is absolutely ripped, there's no way it was believable that he grew up in a post apocalyptic world. He would have been better off as The Terminater.

reply

Compared to everything after T2 it was not so bad, it just tried to do too much and ended up stupid. Just tell a story, you don't need to try like crazy to give all the audience heart attacks

Script was HORRIBLE, no thought went into it. Pure 'riding on nostalgy' and nothing more, plus nothing made much sense - especially the 'Skynet is an app'-thing. How is an app from people's phones going to launch nuclear missiles?

I could talk about how bad the script is for a whole evening and not run out of things to talk about.

Casting was really bad, I don't think these faces fit the movie at all, I don't think any good script could've been made to work with these actors, and they should definitely have given Arnold a rest already, Terminator needs a menacing, young bodybuilder, not an old has-been (even if he WAS the best part of this movie).

Music was bad. When it wasn't the already-heard terminator-stuff, it was completely stock and not memorable at all.

Sound-effects were horrendous and unrealistic - too much 'bass' and the typically awful gun sounds, etc.

The behaviour of the characters was nonsensical, illogical and not well thought-out at all. When you are trying to catch someone, you do NOT alert them to your presence until you absolutely have to, or after you have already in a winning situation (just to mention one example).

The action was over the top, in a really bad way, the whole helicopters-stuff was just facepalm-groan-foreheadslap and "WTF!"-scream-inducing mess.

Some of the visual effects were good, I really liked what they did with the 'digital arnold' - but it would've been better if they just skipped the nostalgy fix and used an actual young bodybuilder, and did something exciting that way (the way the original 'The Terminator (1984)' did).

Directing was bad, editing was bad, lighting was bad, and then this whole macho crap with the terminator loading weapons with 'kyle' and competing organically (which would never happen, why would emotionless robot care, who is faster or whatnot?).. who the heck thought that was a good idea?

They should never have tried to make a sequel to a pretty much perfect movie. T2 sucks, too.

i loved the movie, but fans just shit on everything. they would also hate T2 if it was released today

reply

Both but the script is the main issue. The casting was poor specially Courtney but the story is a mess.
