Why was it so hard for Samson to say his own name?

I understand that the characters spoke aboriginal languages solely, but Samson seemed unable to speak at all. I like the director's decision to keep dialogue at a minimum to emphasize a realistic sense of nonverbal communication, but I would have thought the two would have at least expressed a few words in their own language. I think if Samson had an inability to speak well it would explain a total lack of communication.

Also, did anyone interpret his lack of response to the sound of Delilah being hit by the car to mean anything significant?

He was high when Delilah was hit by the car. In fact he was high most of the film which put him in a kind of comatose stat. Simple really.

He was off his head on petrol. if you have ever seen solvent abusers when they are high, they exist in another scary parallel universe.

I wondered the same. He may have had a speech disorder (it seemed like he was unable to produce sounds) which may have over time led him to lose confidence and therefore not talk. Or, he could have developed a speech disorder because he had not spoken for so long.

He also did not notice her getting abducted; his character was generally remote and distant, however, I also agree that the fact that he was high did not help.
