Fantastic and exciting news.

For those who don't know, this puts him in the company of Jim Jarmusch, Mira Nair and Iranian director Jafar Panahi, who all won the Camera D'Or for their first works. An incredible achievement, and, having seen the film last night, a well-deserved one.

Interesting point. I remember all of those films with fondness, now that you mention it. Particularly The White Balloon.

I'd be interested to see if a Cannes award could result in (gasp!) wider distribution for an Australian film in its domestic market in 2009. I don't remember whether it helped something like Ten Canoes.

Ten Canoes did ok through Dendy, if I recall correctly (although was that actually an award winner? I know it got selected in the un certain regard category, but can't recall it winning anything). I think it's shameful that Dendy in Canberra has refused to show S&D... I had to go to Greater Union! Having said that, I guess they might yet pick it up in light of the recent award win.

This doesnt surprise me at all. This is easily the second best photographed film I've seen in the last ten years. The best is The Revenant.
