Africa

I saw this movie yesterday, and I don't think that the Africa shots, which is what tempted me to go to the movie at all, was either necessary or relevant and I wonder why it was included. The story in Denmark works on its own (not great, but okay) and the Africa part seems to be just sensationalism --- or to establish the doctor's commitment to his profession of saving lives/healing people, but I don't think such an elaborate sub-story is necessary to do that.

I just can't figure this out.... Anyone else feel the same?

i disagree because the major theme of the movie is revenge. the sub-plot, with the African rapist asked the question, "how would you deal with this evil person?"

reply

Yeah, I think the scenes with the warlord Bigman were intended to mirror the scenes of the bullies in Denmark - Sofus and Lars - showing that both Elias/Christian and Anton were faced with similar situations (although very different in scale), and how each of them had to face those situations.

I actually liked the Africa part of the movie, necessary and still relevant.

Short answer: I see several tiers of bullying and violence shown in the movie. From the kids being bullied to the scenes in the Sudan that extends it to a more powerful and violent level...a whole village is terrorized.
