Although it wasn't very deep...

... this movie was pretty awesome, being that the robberies weren't glamorized and the chase scenes realistic, making the overall feel more mature and thrilling. From the police station escape to the robbery gone wrong, the movie never insults the audiences intelligence, while also providing eye catching and thrilling sequences to bite nails over. Exciting stuff here...

Babe 2: Pig in the City is by far the best talking pig movie of the last three hundred years.

I thought it was a mess, and while the robberies maybe weren't glamourised the lead character certainly was. The only 'based on the truth' part was Rettenberger's robberies, and the director made absolutely no effort to establish why he continued to carry them out, when he must have known he would be caught sooner rather than later. The write-up refers to a 'hobby' but his actions obviously had a psychiatric basis.

And in the way he was portrayed his character was certainly sanitised. We see him kill his probation officer (who in real life was a vocational guidance officer, not a parole officer) but the film makes no mention of the three other killings he was thought to have perpetrated.

The part where he was mortally stabbed by the dodgy character who seemed to know all about hiding in plain sight was an invention; this character did not exist. Rettenberger was shot and killed by the Austrian police when he attempted to run a roadblock. End of.

During his robberies he wore a Ronnie Reagan mask, hence his nickname with the public of 'Shotgun Ronnie'.

An insult to the intelligence from the outset.

based on a true story.

'Based on' covers a multitude of sins, as you must know. I was commenting on the facts rather than the version served up to us in the film.

Bogwart...thanks for the information. I just finished watching the film, and I was puzzled by the enigmatic/sociopathic portrayal of the robber. I did think the second half of the film was riveting, but i am glad to learn the truth of the actual robber.

Me too. I still can't work out why this guy was treated in such a sympathetic way, when IRL he was a complete sociopath.I think the writer and director would have been better advised to present it as a crime story, and to have ignored the fact that it was very loosely based on a real character. After all, the half which you (and I) found more interesting was invention.

The film was based on a novel, and the only part the novel acknowledged was that Rettenberg was famous in Austria as a marathon runner. And that he robbed banks.

Most people can't afford to be deep.
