My review!

Hey Guys!

I am trying to watch ALL oscar nominated movies and I've seen more than half... I watch them all, even if they have a little nominated for something small as "Costume Design" although I feel that no Oscar Nomination is "small".

I try to be as fair as possible when I write movie reviews and I think that everyone is entitled to their own opinions, however I am not saying sh!t about any of the people involved with the films, unless they deserve it. (:

Please check out my reviews on my blog...

Thanks!
Rob

Here's his actually review of Miracle Fish from his blog. I don't know why he didn't simply post it.

- "Miracle Fish". I have to start off by saying, the little boy, played by Karl Beattie is adorable and a very good actor. And the movie is quite a thriller. It shocks, it's interesting and it's constructed well. Very well made but still kinda weak and the ending is quite sudden. Does it deserve an Oscar Nomination? Probably not.. 7/10.

Well to my way of thinking it's unclear why Joe went to the sick bay: can kids just go for a lie down? "Not in my day." (I'm not sure they had sick bays and nurses in attendance.)

My main objection is that it's not clear that Joe wishes for everyone to go away - just that he falls asleep and wakes up to find the school deserted. And it's a bit of a leap from that to thinking that he's completely alone, even for an imaginative eight-year-old. It could just as well be that he's taking advantage of the temporary absence of grown-ups to eat out the tuck shop. (Tuck shop? That's another thing we never have. Kids these days &c.)

Of the short subject, live action, Oscar Nom'd films that I saw, this one had to be the scariest.
It reallly creeped me out.
Cleverly done, though even if the volume was so soft that the projectionist could not turn it up any louder for fear of distorting the sound.

Having screened many Academy Award nominated shorts before this one was different to any of the others which makes it certainly deserving for the award not to say any of the others we have screened are bad simply that should we celebrate and encourage diversity. It is extremely difficult to get an audience engaged in a short film “Thriller” due to the short time you have to build an audience relationship with the key cast. I agree DogtownGirl the sound is super important, and this one is a bloody challenge due to the extreme levels, one point you have to strain to hear a noise the next all hell breaks loose which makes it hard to get a balance when you screen to an audience.

jed-82,

I take it you're a projectionist then? I know a few of them ... tricky stuff getting a good sound balance, I hear time and again. Glad we agree on the importance of sound, for the viewers.

The more Ken Loach films I try to see, the more I think they need subtitles!
