Should have also focused on exploitation movies.

Maybe that one minute wasn't enough to explain how grindhouse movies became famous in the USA. This documentary was moreover focusing on horror cult and mainstream movies.

What was disappointing for me was also they could have tried to show the rise in horror film festivals like AfterDark's and all. Nevertheless, I was quite satisfied by the documentary.

I would've found that interesting, too. I think the biggest problem with the documentary (aside from the plentiful spoilers that are mentioned in another thread [ see "Great film, one bad part" - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1337117/board/nest/168965566 ] - anyone who isn't already well-versed in horror films will see WAY too much of a LOT of great movies and it might ruin the experience for them!) is that it was too short. They had enough material to do a series, even just an additional disc's worth of interviews etc., which would have allowed them to get into the less mainstream stuff that you mentioned. I thought they did a good job with what they used, but yeah, there was definitely more that could've been covered for those of us who like the off-the-beaten-path films. A bit of history behind what Tarantino and Rodriguez were trying to recreate with "Planet Terror" and "Death Proof" - that whole grindhouse subculture - would have been fascinating.

P.S. For anyone heading to that other thread, just FYI, I spoiler-tagged everything I posted there, so you won't be in danger of seeing anything you don't want to see from me, at least!

Are either of you aware that the same company also produced a similiar film called "American Grindhouse" dedicated to that very subject matter? In fact, the copy I bought was packaged together with said film.

I had NOT known that, actually - I'd rented the copy of Nightmare that I saw, so it came on its own. Thank you for the heads up! Is Grindhouse a good doc? I'll have to keep an eye out for it...

I was just going to suggest this! I enjoyed American Grindhouse and learned a lot more from it.
