Arguing over the song

Is that the most hilarious scene ever or what? I was laughing so bad, tears and stomach cramps, lots of other scenes too. This is so underrated, one of the best of the year.

It's funny if you've never seen a Romanian film. At least one in the last 20 years.

reply

I have seen quite a few... elaborate please.

Due to the fact that the Romanian language can be really tricky sometimes, as far as the meaning and sense of the words are concerned, it can be a juicy source of humour which a writer can speculate, indeed. That's why when I see a Romanian film I'm always curious to see how accurate the English translation is, and I've been really disappointed in a few cases, because much of the "juice" is lost with inaccurate or sometimes close to impossible translation. There's is also an old tendency of Romanians to argue over small details - just like the characters in this film do. Nothing wrong so far. But I've seen this type of humour in many recent Romanian films like "Hirtia va fi albastra", "4 3 2", "A fost sau n-a fost" etc and I would expect a young director to come up with something new. They can do a hell of a lot better than that.

That one is a heavy film to "digest", I can agree with that. I can understand why foreigners liked it so much - it was meant to shock and for the better part it did. I for one didn't like it much, cs I believe some things were simply "squeezed" into the script just for the sake of showing them. Something like: "here we have the grumpy and frustrated receptionist, on the other side you can see the student campus which just ran out of hot water and in a few seconds we will pass by the typical boring Romanian family".
There were a few small things though which added "flavour" to the script, and I enjoyed seeing them, as they reminded me of childhood. Remember the student girl keeping the coins in a milk bottle? when we were kids we used to believe that the coins will increase in number if you keep them in a milk bottle :) - hard to assume someone of her age had the same habit but well...
But talking about shocking, I remember I saw a documentary on tv about abortion and birth control in the communist era and I tell you, it was way more shocking than this film. That's why I think directors should focus on inventing and exploring things rather than trying to imitate the reality which in many cases beats the movies. It has been proved.

It was definitely unexpected as I never watch trailers or read about movies I'm about to watch but it wasn't exactly shocking for me for whatever reason. I just loved the movie for what it was, also the scenes that you thought were pointless and I can respect that. Anyway I watched "A fost sau n-a fost?" and I think it's remarkable, I still have to let it sink in tho.
Any other recommendations?

"Restul e tacere" (The rest is silence) - also made a few years ago, 2007 I think. "The paper will be blue" is also a good recent movie. And if you ask me, the best Romanian film ever made is "Atunci i-am condamnat pe toti la moarte" (And then I sentenced them all to death) made back in the 70s. You deffinitely have to see that one - it reunites some of the best actors Romania ever had. Hard to find but you can find it on torrent sites if you use such stuff.

You mentioned the paper will be blue before and I watched it today, another masterpiece, just wow.
I will also get Restul e tacere and Atunci i-am condamnat pe toti la moarte, there is this torrent called filme Ro and it has 184GB of movies.

Glad you liked it. Hope you will like the other ones too.

It was funny in my opinion as well...maybe not side splittingly funny (for me at least), but still, quite funny. LOL

I saw nothing funny about it. I would probably tell Anca what Cristi did if I were him.
