Anyone else notice the parallels between John and Cyrus?

Both John (John C. Reilly)and Cyrus (Jonah Hill) latch on to the women in their life and as a result, prevent other men from getting too close. Was this a purposeful, creative decision on behalf of the writers?

Anyone else notice this?

I believe it was on purpose since they share many mannerisms in the film.

Jonah plays a a young, stagnant adult who is co-dependent, manipulative, and disturbed in some way, I'm still watching it so haven't quite got him figured out yet.

Mom loves her son, but she's weak, emotionally co-dependent, hiding in her son.

It seems the connection between all 3 characters is co-dependency, despondency, spiritual disempowerment.

I think it was definitely intentional, mirroring the two. That's probably why Molly responded to John when everyone else was so repulsed by him, he is immature and highly dependent, exactly like her son. Molly had some sort of dependency issues of her own, her weird relationship with her son was definitely symbiotic, so she responded to that in John.

And like you said, John had exactly the same sort of triangle with his ex wife and her fiance that Molly had with her son and John. John and Molly's kid were definitely cut from the same cloth. Which is why this movie is so much like the other John Reilly movie Step Brothers. They just replaced Jonah Hill with a different immature curly haired dude.

That's a good observation.
