Well, why was William Hurt sitting with the black kid on his lap?. I did not understand that bit at all!!
Very confusing!!!
I guess they didn't have a white or asian kid on board. ;)

The reason it makes little sense is because they kind of screwed up the character of Pip (the black kid). In the book, after his incident in the whaling boat (which is a bit different there) and being out floating at sea for a while, he totally loses his mind. The movie didn't really get that across. Ahab takes pity on him and lets him live in his cabin, and Pip becomes sort of like the character of the Fool to Ahab's King Lear, in a way.
