Nope, she played a very dour character. I think her best role is way past her.

She was excellent in the fairly recent "Bleak House" ... here, she gets to look sad for a couple of minutes then, whoosh, she's gone.

But you ARE Blanche ... and I AM.

It's a very brief role, like a small supporting part. The character doesn't even exist in the book and is only briefly mentioned once or twice. It's hard to say why the role was added to this version or why they got such a prominent actress for it. Anderson needs big, meaty roles like in "Bleak House," this was kind of beneath her, IMO. Had it been a smaller cameo like Sutherland's or Boyd's roles it would have actually made more sense in a strange way. This was more than a cameo but less than a serious or important part.

Cast member Gillian Anderson first came to fame playing Dana Scully on the TV series The X Files. It was mentioned several times throughout the run of the series that Scully and her family were big fans of Herman Melville's book 'Moby Dick': her nickname for her Naval officer father was "Captain Ahab;" his nickname for her was "Starbuck;" and her dog, which she named Queequeg, was, like its namesake, also an eater of humans (the dog ate the body of its previous owner).

I agree that Gillian Anderson was the best actor in this (although Raoul Trujillo as Queequeg was also great). But Anderson only had a few minutes of screen time. Eddie Marsan was also quite good.
