Worse than 2013 in pretty much every single way.

This was such a mixed bag. The references and Evil Dead 2 feeling it had were fun but overall 2013 was better in pretty much every single way. It took forever to get going and once it did it didn't feel that punchy like Raimi's films or even the 2013 one. The characters were just bland I didn't give a shit about them (I know its a horror movie but usually ED's characters were at least memorable/funny so you got entertainment out of watching them die) The single mom trope is just so tiresome and I'm sick of it and I was annoyed that this movie had to trod it out. The gore was pretty great though, along with the practical effects. The kills are good and most of the sound design was pretty solid. Technically it's a great movie but everything else about it is just blah. I probably won't rewatch it along with the other movies honestly. 7/10 for me and that's being generous.

I got it from the internet. I tried to rewatch it after watching it one time and couldn't get past the incantation scene. There's nothing about this movie that has replay value. The scenes of the possessed mom rambling nonsense are boring.

Frankly I would rank Evil Dead 2013 as the best of the whole franchise. That movie was nasty and relentless, loved it.

reply

Definitely.

I liked it. I also liked 2013. Both different films. However I do agree that 2023 have less replay value.

reply

I disagree. I would rather rewatch this film. I already have.

I saw 2023 twice on the silver screen and liked best the second time. When I saw it at home I was less interested!
However both are good films.

reply

I wish I watched it at the movies.

reply

It was a great experience!

7/10 is pretty high in my book. I gave the 2013 ED like 5 or 6.

This is the issue with sequels and remakes. They're always judged against the others in the franchise. Unfortunately for EDR it's up against 4 quality films.

Going into this I knew it could literally be the worst ED film and still be as high as an 8/10.

If ED wasn't a thing and this was a brand new I.P. it would be getting more praise than it is right now.

As for comparisons to ED (2013). That film is brilliant, this one is probably lesser in most respects but it's not a night and day difference.

I'm confused why people don't like it. It's just a fun movie that takes itself just the right amount of seriously. Extremely well filmed, also. With a bunch of shit movies coming out masquerading as good, this movie was a breath of fresh air. You could tell everybody involved cared. This movie is the opposite of soulless.
