Amazing documentary

I can't help but smiling through it as I watch it for the first time. That Morgan Freeman is going back and trying to help the town where he grew up. And I think by and large the kids have their heads on straight, its just their parents who are stuck in the past. I also notice that these kids didn't go totally crazy on their budget despite the fact Mr. Freeman was footing the bill *L*

Heather and Jeremy are so cute together too. :)

I wish this was the only place this happened and that it was done.

If you liked this one, I would suggest "The Order of Myths", which is about segregated Mardi Gras celebrations.

Isn't it ironic comments were made during a committee meeting over the possibility of violence yet it only occurred at the white prom, with an adult slapping a young man after a fight

That was very ironic.

This film also brought to mind a doc called "Bama Girl" about an African American girl who is running for Homecoming Queen at the University of Alabama and faces all kinds of obstacles, including the white frats & sororities who usually voted as a block for their own candidate. I think it was filmed in 2003 or 2004 and it really enlightened me as to the effect this block of white students not only in this election, but the future of state politics.

I live in Alabama and I was shocked by it, slightly.

I went to Auburn University when this movie was being made and we got wind of it. So being hard core haters of anything Bama the movie was screened there. It was a great doc. just as profound as this and just as eye-opening.

It depends on how you look at it... it had a great turn out of film groupies (like myself) but for the general public I don't think so much cause they didn't know what the movie was about, probably assuming something positive about Bama. Plus movie night at Auburn was mostly on Thursday nights but this screening was held on a different day, so it also depended on how many people got wind of the screening.

Very interesting documentary. I read the synopsis on HBO and watched the whole thing thinking this couldn't possibly be serious. I mean, I know the south, but I thought by this time now, it'd be different. But it isn't.

It's slow to change, it's resistant to change, and it's really interesting to watch. There was a moment in the documentary where a commentator is screened/blurred out and says something along the lines of, "they [racist white parents] know it's wrong, but they aren't going to change themselves. They also don't want the whole world knowing that they're racist." Not verbatim.

I found that to be the epitome of the segregated "white" prom that was hosted at ANG (Army National Guard) building. Because they barred cameras from being able to film that "white" prom, we don't know how it went but it seems like all the children of those parents are just afraid to disappoint and/or be disowned by their parents. Naturally, I don't blame the high schoolers. I blame the parents who live like they're back in the 50s and 60s.

I just hope those high schoolers get to the point where they can and are able to stand up and think for themselves.

I got a few things out of this documentary. The south has a lot of really fat women. There are also a few hot ones but their accent nearly ruins it.

I solidified my opinion that most are just a bunch of dumb hicks that can't speak right.

Not only is the race thing an issue at their school but they also go against the constitution by having prayer in school activities.

The interracial couple should just move to California and no one will even notice them. I know they must not get paid much over there but they can move to a small Californian city first to get a bank roll going.

Wow.. I like how you were enlighted by this documentry and for the fact it was about racism and that comes in at number 3 after your fat and accent comment tells me that your intelligence level isn't to high. Way to go.

You must be one of those fat accented women I was talking about. Don't take everything so seriously. There is no need to insult my intelligence.

By the way I wasn't ranking the things I learned in any certain order of importance. If I had to start ranking things the big bunch of hicks comment would go first.

You already insulted it by posting.

Without commenting on the substance of the film; I like accents. The bland, homogenized language we are all moving towards is a bit boring. One thing I did chuckle at was the limo. Was half the student body in that one vehicle?

May I speak for the entire south that thank GAWD you live elsewhere.

What an ignorant ass.

reply

GAWD? Further proof the south is illiterate? You must be one of the fat chicks. I didn't mean anything by it. It was mostly just a joke post. Don't eat me.

reply

Using the actual word would be blasphemy. *rolls eyes* Most people in the South know this.

Since I am bored (it's summer and I work at a university), I will humor you. I am 5'3" and 120. If that is fat in your world, you must live in Los Angeles. I live in San Diego, so I get it. No worries honey. I won't eat you. Unless you're Asian that is .
