I Liked the Racist Dad

Now before I get crap, let me say that I'm black and I don't hate anyone. I don't remember her name, but she was the only white girl that I saw dating a black. At first I thought her dad was a complete ass (maybe he is), but as the movie went on, I could see him change a little bit.

I could tell that he didn't approve of their relationship, but not so much because he hates black people, he just seemed worried about what other people would do because they hate black people. I know it sounds weird, but if I had a daughter and dating someone might put her life in danger, I would do the same...but he doesn't stop it...he just disapproves.

However, that one girl who dropped off the committee (you know she's the one who faked the gun threat), her and her family can fade away with the rest of the outdated logic.

His name was Glenn I believe and while I think he said he didn't agree with it, I don't really think he meant it, or at least really didn't really "like" himself for saying it.

You can see that he a) knew it's wrong to hate people for skin color and that he knew he was just a biproduct of a racist family and b) he knew that his daughter could be in danger.

Good observation!

He was an interesting guy. He had pretty disgusting beliefs, but he seemed like he knew he was wrong. He basically said at one point something like "I had a racist dad, and he had a racist dad, and now I am a racist dad, and people are racists because of racist dads, and only we can stop it" which I guess leads you to think that he is conflicted about his beliefs, which is a good start. I wouldn't go nearly as far as to say I liked him, but I didn't think he was irredeemably evil.
