Greta Gerwig as 'Naomi'

Really? She was the best of those who auditioned? She is the most bland, lifeless, dull actress I think I've ever seen after witnessing her "performance" in this movie.

She's about as lively and interesting as a paper towel.

It was just like she was reading the lines for the first time. Very annoying but decent eye candy.

While Liza Minnelli was not much to look at in the original, at least she had "spunk" and she had chemistry with Dudley Moore...Greta Gerwig seemed to be asleep and there was ZERO chemistry between her and Brand. She was absolutely horrible.

I completely agree. I'm currently watching this movie, wondering...wow, who did she bone to get this part?

Her looks to skills ratio is way off. I'm not saying she's ugly, she has a bit of a man shaped face, and her top teeth look like a denture plate that's falling out, other than that she's not all that bad looking. It's just that usually when an actress is that horrible, it doesn't matter because she's gorgeous (think Pamela Anderson), but that's just not the case here. I'm totally baffled. I just don't get it. It was just so disappointing, the rest of them were doing so well, especially Helen Mirren, loved her as Hobson! It just wasn't fair to them to cast her in this movie at all, or to us. Greta Gerwig seemed like she was on a stage in high school play, too loud, inappropriate emotions, monotone, stiff, just bad across the board. There's no way she could have read for the part, and if she HAD read for the part, there's no way she could have gotten it, but somehow she did. Will someone please tell me how?

I disagree. Perhaps it is because I have never liked Liza Minelli, but I saw her as a better love interest than who was cast in the original. She came across as innocent and adorable, which is how I envision the female lead in this movie to be. I can't disassociate Liza from the diva she is in real life, so I can never see her as adorable.

Now, while I think Helen Mirren is great, and she was good here, I still think Gielgud made a better Hobson. Brand and Moore gave different portrayals of the same character and I thought they were both good in their own right.

I rate both movies about the same - decent, but not great.

If you don't get everything you want, think of the things you don't get that you don't want.

Wow yes. i could not stop wondering HOW SHE got cast? I kept thinking even Katy Perry would have been a better choice. she probably saw the original Liza performance way too many times as i swear i heard her try to immolate a Liza-esque inflection. (i saw the original Arthur many many times).

SORRY GRETA! im sure you are a good actress. just no spark. and im sure that was due somewhat to the director.

oh it was a painful film. Russell was not so bad. but Helen Mirin. SPECTACULAR.

It's Cute, How You Think I'm Listening

Completely disagree. I think she had a perfect style that matched Brand perfectly. If he is the rich weirdo, she had the kind of poor hippie chick weirdo quality that made them work very well together.

I tried to watch this movie this morning, and actually turned it off BECAUSE of her. As much as I don't like Russell Brand, he was light years easier to watch than Greta Gerwig. Each time she came on screen, I found my attention wandering away because she was just so.....lifeless. Boring. Dull. zzzzzzzzz....sorry, I was just thinking of Greta.

Seriously, I had to turn it off because of her. She's the female lead, and she was sleepwalking through her role. Worst choice for a lead actress ever.

I completely agree with this. I thought she did a fantastic job in her role.

I was discussing this with the wife, I guess she is supposed to be an "up and comer"? I thought she was like a zooey deschanel with all the quirkiness and charm subtracted.

I think maybe budget had something to do with it, with all the notable actors placed throughout the movie who probably require a pretty penny maybe they went with a diamond in the rough approach, find someone who will be a star later on? Time will tell, maybe she is just suited for different types of movies.

I am biased though, I grew up with the original but I guess this is an okay remake but I do enjoy some of brand's humor in his stand up act. The "We are a small demographic line" did make me laugh out load.

I just wonder if why they wouldn't try katy perry in this role, even if she couldn't act it still would have made alot more money to see these 2 on screen.

She reminded me of the characters Zooey Deschanel usually plays. Kind of a calm, sleepy sweetness with a sense of adventure. Zooey is of course very pretty, but the woman in this movie seems more genuine in my opinion.

reply

That's exactly what I was thinking.

Zooey Deschanel's "quirkiness" is so forced it makes me want to throw my TV out a window. Greta seemed far more genuine.

reply

I agree !!

I think Greta was not a good choice, and clearly not as good as Liza in the original. One line was very apparent - 'Closet'. When Liza said that line she was all eyes and demeanor, really gave that line meaning. With Greta, she was sleep-walking! I even had to think twice what Greta meant - that Arthur had mistakenly gone into the closet. Then I remembered the same line delivered by Liza, to understand what Greta meant when she said 'closet'.
