Goof in the final scene. (SPOILERS)

In the final scene of the film, Frank O'Neil is handed a DVD called "A Day in the Life of Charlie Price", which was put together by the two university students Eric and Ashley under the instruction of Joanne and Charlie (as indicated in the scene right before). The DVD's contents expose Frank's role in the film's events, and numerous copies of it were sent to the Senate Investigation Committee.

When Frank opens the DVD's case, he sees that the following message is written on the DVD itself:

"Good luck in prison.
With love,
Damon, Joanne + Charlie"

The goof is that Damon's name is mentioned instead of Gary's. It should have been "Gary, Joanne + Charlie" instead, because Damon was long dead by the time Frank received the DVD. Damon died shortly after he, Joanne and Charlie had arrived at the university, which was located just outside of Beaverton.

I don't think it makes sense to write a message like that partly on the behalf of a deceased person. If that had even been the intention (in that they were trying to say that the message was on the behalf of the *entire* science team), then the names of Gary (alive and kicking at the time) and Phil (also deceased) should have been included as well. But those involved in the making of this film didn't do that, so it looks like the message was intended to be on the behalf of the surviving members of the science team.... in which case they must have mixed up the characters of Damon and Gary.

It could be possible that no one got anything mixed up when the message on the DVD was written, in that originally Gary was supposed to be dead at the end of the film, with Damon alive instead. But that seems unlikely, given how crucial Gary's computer skills were throughout the film (especially at the end of the film's events, when Gary had access to the satellites). He was too important to the plot, so Damon couldn't have taken his place. After all, he didn't seem to be as skilled with computers as Gary was, so he couldn't have pulled off working with the satellites. As a result, Damon was expendable.

But even if it is actually the case that Gary was originally supposed to be dead at the end of the film, then this is still a goof, because then the film's crew should have altered the DVD's message to reflect the change of plans regarding the fate of Gary. So, no matter which way you look at it, I'd say this is a pretty glaring film mistake. :)

So what you're saying is: what probably was just a mistype by the prop department ruins the entire film?

O...k.

I don't think it was a mistake. They did mean to sign it on behalf of the dead guy. Damon worked directly with Frank, so adding his name was significant. It underscores the fact that Frank betrayed Damon, leading to his death.
