Questions About ep. 4 --- White Knight's Stratagem

Great series --- probably enjoyed "The Patient's Eyes" and "The White Knight Stratagem" the best --- "Photographer's Chair" seemed to drag ---

In the "White Knight's Stratagem," just before Doyle takes off in a cab to interview the chess master, he is seen talking to --- no one ! --- and mentioning that he's "changed his mind," and that he's "headed elsewhere today." To whom was he supposed to be speaking ? Was there material cut from the U.S. broadcast ? Or was this scene just a bad edit ?

Later, when we visit the apartment of the murderer Ned Ball, Ned is seen scraping or honing something near the fire --- do we ever find out what it is that he's doing ? Furthermore, the bones on the table near his knife looked strangely like a human hand --- further bits of unexplained creepiness !

Thanks in advance !

He'd told Dr Bell that he intended to visit his father that morning. My take on that scene was that he was outside the asylum and then decided to visit the chess master instead. I assumed that he was talking to "someone" at the front door.

I think he was talking to the cabby, but otherwise I agree.
