Is the plane crash an inside joke?

I mean, WTF, no way would anyone survive THAT with just a few minor scratches! A 747 crashes into the middle of London and Izzie walks away because he locked himself in the bathroom surrounded by a few inflatables?

Seriously, is that a joke? Because it really seems too stupid for anyone to take remotely seriously.
