Seriously..

- a very good movie! As a Norwegian I have for a long time though Norwegian films sucked, and they did, but in the last few years I'm super surprised by how good they are, and Kongen av Bastøy is absolutely fantastic! A most-see for every real movie fan, who wants to see how movies can be different made and fantastic! I love the whole movie, from beginning to end and really want everyone else to see this wonder too! :)

Wish you a very nice day! :)

Well. Im very mixed about my impression of the movie. Sure. The acting was kind of solid despite Stellan Skarsgårds absolute wreckege of hi's own role. The setting is terrific. Very nice photography indeed and very nice scenery. So far so good. But the story, the drama and how events unfold is very blunt. The twist's are not working for me at all. They are far to obvious and the ending scene was far from shocking or unexpected. It even made me angry actually.

Spoiler warning...

Well he went in the water and they tried together to get up but failed. I have done the same thing and it is not hard to get up if you get help from a friend. Anyways they have a moment together and then they both seem to realise he has got to die. But why the hell did they not try again? You can survive in cold water for much longer then the duration of the scene and getting up is not hard at all. Just back up a bit, remove your coat and throw it like a rope. But i guess. You would not really try to save your best friend. Just look him in the eye and let him die like a boss. That's cool. Oh wait. Duche!

That was my initial assessment... that he should have been able to pull himself out of the water. But after giving it more thought. The boys were most likely under nourished. It appeared as though getting half rations was a common form of punishment. Add to that the fatigue of the nights events, running through the wilderness in winter, and at one point having to carry C1/Olav. I can definitely see how fatigue to that extent could prevent a late teen, early 20s male from pulling himself out of freezing water soaking through several layers of wool clothing.

Kinda late in the thread here, but I just watched this movie. And was very impressed by it.

Peace

Coming to this late, too, but I only just saw this today. A few points about his inability to leave the water.

1: They'd been confined in solitary for several days before this, on nearly no food, no heat, and no ability to even move around. This, after working in the forest and on limited rations.

2: He had just run through the snow, and carried C1 on his back for who knows how long. He was already tired, probably running on adrenaline alone.

3: Water that cold will indeed sap your strength remarkably fast. It was soaked into his heavy clothes and shoes, making him heavier not just to himself, but to C1 as well.

4: When C1 tried to help him, you could hear the ice crack; I got the distinct impression that they were trying as hard as they could WITHOUT further stressing/cracking the ice, limiting how hard each could pull. Indeed, I expected them both to fall in at one point.

So I think it's perfectly reasonable that he was unable to get out. Besides, even if he did, he'd have died anyway from hypothermia with all those wet clothes and no way to warm himself out on the ice.

Here's to the health of Cardinal Puff.

Good explanation, Mainwaring Rules. That makes sense to me.

Just seen the film today and I thought it was very good indeed. I thought Benjamin Helstad's performance was quite mesmerising. He has real screen presence and intensity. I liked the realism of the story, but it also had a magical quality - the moose (or whatever it was) at the end appearing as a beacon of hope for Erling and Olav, even if one of them didn't make it. I also liked the repetition of the story of the whale being harpooned three times and taking a whole day to die. For some reason, I took Erling to be represented by the whale - he never gave up during his entire time on the island, but in the end his strength gave out and he had to let go.

All in all, a riveting movie with some excellent performances.

Spoiler alert:

Did that last scene remind anyone else of Titanic? Probably every one who watches this movie, I'd guess. Still, the movie is well-done and fairly compelling if somewhat predictabable. Would recommend to friends

As far as being predictable, perhaps a bit but while watching I did not expect either of the two boys crossing the ice to survive. This, I think, is based on my experience with films made outside of Hollywood. It was a very good film.

I thought Titanic as well when he was sinking into the deep water. Btw I believe he could have gotten out of the water. But like someone else said, surviving after that would be near impossible due to all the lost body heat, and soaked clothes, etc.

This was a really good film. I thought the relationship between C1 and C19, that is Olav and Erling respectively, was really well done and it reminded me of Au Revoir les Enfants. The finale before the ending was devastating and realistic.

Why do you refuse to remember me?
