Total waste of time (IMO)

It reminded me of the big rubbish broadway shows of late where audiences cheer just because a celebrity walks on-stage or it's really loud or the lighting effects blind you. It's like people don't know what really construes talent anymore and respond to the old "razzle dazzle"...the songs in this movie were all trying to be hommages/parodies to genre music and set up as if, "yer really gonna see something now folks!" and then came these limp, underdeveloped routines...

You have to be as good or better than your subject to do that sort of thing...I was lost the minute the guys were making tap-dancing noises with their tennis shoes...I read-up on this that the guys apparently really can sing but their voices sounded processed or something, and the lip-sync was really bad. It all had the feel of a high school production put on by Ken dolls (proving beauty really is skin deep after all). Brent Corrigan's turn as a thoughtful hustler was one of the more genuine moments, one need say no more.

In all, the irritating musical bits reminded me something of the musical they put on in "Waiting For Guffman," only since here they're being sincere it wasn't funny--the Tammi Faye "parody" seemed like it would never, ever stop. And the dancers trying to ape Fosse moves (oy vey, please make it stop!) reminded me of Lola Heatherton's Juul Haalmeyer dancers on SCTV, only they were less embarrassing back then because they were SUPPOSED to be making fools of themselves .

I'm not sure what it is about lack of production finesse (money? Vision? Talent?) that can make a project like this so grating to the nerves, but it is--something like someone singing a kareoke version of "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" and forgetting the words half way through but continuing on anyway instead of sitting down and shutting up. If you're the type of person who would applaud that and say, "Because he/she was TRYING so haaard!" then you'll likely love this.

Well, there's still room for a definitive gay musical then. This one made "Naked Boys Singing" seem like the Sound Of Music by comparison.
