The Keelers

I've always wondered why Kim and Mark never let Payson take sponsorship money. I understand not letting her take any before she made it to the elite level, but when the show started and Payson was the crowd favorite, I don't understand their reasoning. They would've easily been able to pay for Payson to go to college by saving enough and I believe they had enough integrity not to exploit Payson.

Keep in mind that they not only had to ensure that Payson but also Becca was able to get into college. Payson could have easily gotten an NCAA scholarship but Becca wasn't that talented of a gymnast so they would have to dip into their savings for her college education.

So if they forfeited Payson's NCAA eligibility for the sponsorships, they would have to dip into their savings for not just one but two girls college education.

Plus if they had taken sponsorships, it could have put way more pressure on Payson to perform well and she could have seriously reinjured herself or something. I actually see where they were coming from.

Never thought of that I had always wondered why. I liked the Keelers.

The OP was stated that Payson was more than popular enough to get a sponsorship deal to pay for college. That wouldn't have had anything to do with Becca, if anything it would've made more sense for them to get Payson a sponsorship and to take some of that money for Becca's education (not necessarily the right thing to do, but if you read some things on some real gymnasts its not that much of stretch)

I honestly think that would have been too much pressure on her since she would pretty much be supporting her whole family. Plus they are also looking at the down side to it as well, what if the sponsorship money runs dry before they go to college and she doesn't get another contract for more money or she gets injured and doesn't get another contract for that reason as well.

the girls WERE all elites at the beginning of the show. in real life, sponsorships wouldn't go to girls "before making it to the elite level."

in real life, most elites do not get sponsorships. forfeiting NCAA for sponsorship money, particularly BEFORE an olympic games, is incredibly risky.

sometimes, the risk is worth it. aka aly raisman, who went pro 8 or so months before london, luckily didn't injure herself, went on to be the most decorated US gymnast of the games, and could use her olympic wins POST olympics. or mckayla maroney who has more charisma and charm than pretty much anyone and wound up being a media darling by spinning a sh!t situation into a good one.

rebecca bross, prime example of risk taking gone bad. took sponsorship early, got hideously injured, didn't make it to the olympics and barely got through trials in 2012 which basically rendered her unmarketable plus she wasn't eligible to compete for a college under a scholarship. she's now holed up in WOGA coaching level 5 and no-one besides gym fans will know who she is.

smart and caring parents will try to avoid what happened to rebecca bross. besides, gymnasts who go pro are giving up a chance for a full ride scholarship, which is guaranteed saving of thousands of dollars. going pro does not guarantee offers and sponsors knocking at your door. and when they do, it means that person is at the mercy of sponsors and not in control of their 'business.'

They didn't want their daughter to have to pay the bills.
They felt it was their job to support her in every way, not the other way round
