I understand not letting her take any before she made it to the elite level, but when the show started and Payson was the crowd favorite, I don't understand their reasoning.
the girls WERE all elites at the beginning of the show. in real life, sponsorships wouldn't go to girls "before making it to the elite level."
in real life, most elites do not get sponsorships. forfeiting NCAA for sponsorship money, particularly BEFORE an olympic games, is incredibly risky.
sometimes, the risk is worth it. aka aly raisman, who went pro 8 or so months before london, luckily didn't injure herself, went on to be the most decorated US gymnast of the games, and could use her olympic wins POST olympics. or mckayla maroney who has more charisma and charm than pretty much anyone and wound up being a media darling by spinning a sh!t situation into a good one.
rebecca bross, prime example of risk taking gone bad. took sponsorship early, got hideously injured, didn't make it to the olympics and barely got through trials in 2012 which basically rendered her unmarketable plus she wasn't eligible to compete for a college under a scholarship. she's now holed up in WOGA coaching level 5 and no-one besides gym fans will know who she is.
smart and caring parents will try to avoid what happened to rebecca bross. besides, gymnasts who go pro are giving up a chance for a full ride scholarship, which is guaranteed saving of thousands of dollars. going pro does not guarantee offers and sponsors knocking at your door. and when they do, it means that person is at the mercy of sponsors and not in control of their 'business.'
