Characters annoying as heck

All the characters, except Luke Perry the mysterious stranger, are annoying as all get-out. The wife and the kid both seem ridiculously helpless and transfixed by some kind of "witlessness" gas or something at critical moments of danger. The husband seems to have taken a hit of the gas at times, too.

Unless I wasn't paying attention, there were two firearms hidden above the cupboard. The husband took one to confront the enemy outside, but he didn't hand the other one to his wife? And, he had told her they were there but she didn't go and get the other one herself?

The husband is armed, the enemy in the yard was not. Looks like the husband gets a hit. But he doesn't finish the job with the gun. He throws away his advantage and proceeds to pound on the other guy, with all too predictable results.

I guess I'm ragging on the writer, and maybe our favorite punching bag of a director. I didn't think the acting was bad.
