Incredibly unique scene

The scene where he's watching his parents get killed by the ax murderer. I don't think I've ever quite seen a scene like that in a film before. That was easily the best part of the movie. If the rest of the movie had been as well done as that scene it would have a 9 on here.

Since I'm responding to your post, I won't black out my whole response. Fair warning, SPOILERS below:

It's an interesting notion. I was certainly hoping that scene would set the tone for this movie and, while disappointment is definitely in the mix, it really just left me numb and indifferent. I just finished watching it with a friend and, during that scene, my friend laughed when the mother got axed in the head because of "how fake that looked." While the film's budget does show at times, I do agree that it was an effective flashback, even if it was the catalyst for one demented, lame character. While we're on the subject, what is it about that scene that you found so impressive? The lighting, the tension, the direction, the pacing? There was something superb about the way it unfolded. At first I thought you might be referring to the camera angles from the point of view of the head of the axe (which reminded me of similar angles done on Breaking Bad, thanks to the brilliant Michael Slovis). Even though that scene was pretty by-the-books slasher fare, it felt more developed than anything else that happened thereafter. All I can say is, those poor actors.

The intensity, the tension, the atmosphere, and the pacing. It all came together. I really felt the emotion during that scene. I mean, we're watching something so incredibly disturbing. The whole scene was like a punch to the chest.
