Nice for Sunday Night

I rather enjoyed this film, mostly watched thinking Tom McCamus MIGHT be in it, and haha, missed his name in the front credits. So when he came on screen, I was squinting at it, saying that looks like Tom McCamus, and it was! Small part but man, he brought us DOWN. That's good acting! As usual. Love that Tom!

I wonder if this took place during the 2006 special or the 2007 special. I watched the Santa one first and I'm surprised Booky Makes Her Mark was released before. The Booky showed is at two different ages and they aren't chronological. Not to mention, Booky's father gets a job at the end of the Santa one and then no job in the 2006 one. Okay, so he lost his job.

Anyhow, between the 2006 and 2007, it's for different audiences since the 2006 has a swear in it.

I ended up overlooking the release of this one. I guess I missed the promoting for it, although I think I might not have even watched the 2007 special yet when this one was premiering.

I didn't know the one on last night was coming, I've only seen the one we're talking about here. Watched a few parts of last night's, it had that nice flavor of old times. The Jalna books were written out of order, I don't think it's really necessary to stay chronological!

Don't take this the wrong way, but it's not like you pick up the third book for the Anne of Green Gables series and you'll see it in the same view as a reader who watches a person or character grow when reading the first book. This is the joy of reading books that are in a series like this, and even L.M. Montgomery's editor or publisher knew this.

The story for the Chronicles of Narnia shown in the movie is still going in order even though the books don't have the characters carry over (which is why the most recent movie need to deviate from the books). But since you mentioned another series, writing out of order is different from reading order. C.S. Lewis had this happened too, with the Magician's Nephew being written further into the series, but he decided to have its time line placed before the first book in the series. Maybe the story wasn't ready for the publisher to invest in it since it wasn't exciting compared to The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, or the story wasn't finished.

Anyhow, I'm glad that I watched Booky and the Secret Santa first because Booky Makes Her Mark annoys me and would have turned me off the series. The latter wasn't boring enough for me to quit watching, but at the same time it's sort of a stories-lumped-together feel. And it's hard to tell since I haven't seen it, but for Booky's Crush, would that be the Booky from the Secret Santa story or the Booky from the Makes Her Mark one? If it's from the latter one, Booky already had a boyfriend so she's had a crush (so it's not entitled "First Crush" but that's the idea) and so it's repeating itself.

But anyhow, if the time line is screwed up between these movies, it might be a mistake on par with Kevin Sullivan making that fourth part to the Anne of Green Gables TV sets. (He had to start making an original past for Anne so she could be bitter and a liar, didn't he? I'm not even a die-hard fan of the series, although I did enjoy them, but it makes me upset what he did when I watched it with my mom at her insistence.)

The Jalna series could not have been read in order at the time they were published. NOW it can, if you want to, but the books came out OUT of order.

Well that's sort of how the Chronicles of Narnia was, concerning the 'first' book (the Magician's Nephew) in the collection. If someone reads a series when the books have just started publishing, well the reader is left waiting for each book to be released even if the author publishes a book that takes place in a non-chronological way. Anyhow, there are drawbacks in having to wait or following after all of them are done. (Fans that follow afterwards don't get to take part in the mania or celebrations like with Harry Potter when the next or last book is published.)

Anyhow, my point was that the books for Booky have been done for years so it's not like the people in charge were dealing with a series that was still being written, like for Harry Potter, which had the first film out before the series was done. Had Harry Potter not been handled well, the studio could have started lumping the books together with half a book covered in every movie or something so that they could save on costs.

Anyhow, perhaps more than you wanted to read.

maybe they only planned on one booky film and then made more because it was rather successful. anyway, with dvd, people can buy the movies and watch them in order at home. i don't think it's that hard to keep a story straight just cos the movies are out of order.

i read a Jalna book over the holiday weekend, one of my favorites, Whiteoak Heritage. remember that AWFUL CBC mini-series they made of the Jalna story? terrible acting, so terrible. you never hear about it anymore.

reply

I don't think I heard about this miniseries. I haven't read the books so, it's unlikely to have drawn me in.
