did they have to do the whole Asian girl wanting a white guy thing. I am Sorry. I am so sorry to bring this up. I am not a racist, but the whole plain Asian girl, white guy thing really shocked me because it was too stereotypical. The girl in this did co-write right?
This also gives me a chance to ask. Do Asian girls really like white guys that much? I was in Boston not too long ago and there were a ton of Asian-White guy couples. Sometimes I was shocked to see very pretty Asian girls with ugly as Moe white guys. Do some of them just go after any white guy?
Oh gosh, be cool when you reply. This is all in good fun.
Wow... the movie isn't following a stereo type, it's following real life; Charlyne and Michael are dating in real life. Or at least they were long before and during shooting.
What? No they aren't. Not now, not ever. That was just a rumor. One that Yi didn't really try to clear up. Reporters that would interview her would take ambiguous comments she would make on the matter, and she would let them run with them. But the two never dated.

"Yi was born in Los Angeles, California; her mother is of Filipino-Spanish descent and her father is of Korean, Irish, German, French and Native American ancestry"
ok so she is asian: one seventh asian.
so if you're gonna worry about what race the charecters are then i suggest you change your comment to "what's with the Filipino/spanish/korean/irish/german/french/native american girl falling for a white guy?"
better yet, just ignore race all together. it could not possibly play a lesser role in this film.
Look at her eyes... Everyone can be easily traced to 10 different ancestires, that really doesn't mean shiet... She might be half asian or a quarter asian, whatever, she's still as ugly as a "full" asian... even though shes only 1/7th by your calculation...
I'm at work. I post all day! IMDb hound! That troll from Harry Potter...
The real problem that no one has mentioned is the fact that white girls won't date asian men as much as white guys date asian women. What ends up happening is you have a whole bunch of asian dudes who don't have gfs. Probably why so many asian dudes just play video games all the time and hang out at internet cafes card shops playing yugioh and stuff.
The real problem that no one has mentioned is the fact that white girls won't date asian men as much as white guys date asian women.
Comedian Steve Byrne, who is Korean/Irish, said it best: "When someone says 'Asian woman', you think 'Sexy!'. 'Asian man'? 'Tech support!'." It's all Western perception.

also racism is illegal in some countries and you can be sued, this may be the internet but still watch what you say.
Well, this isn't "other countries", this is the USA and we have the freedom of speech here. I didn't write the comment, I don't agree with it, but they have every right to say it, racist or not. I will never "watch what I say"
"Sniffle, sniffle...wahh...you are a mean, bad, yucky person and a racist because you pointed out that the girl in the movie is Asian. (stamp foot) You are mean and bad and a poo-poo head, you mean ol' racist!" This childish attitude is getting so old.
Would everyone please look up the word "racist" in the dictionary and start using it properly? We don't even know what the word means anymore! A "racist" is someone who believes that other races are not as good as their own and therefore treats them unfairly. If someone says, "Asian girls should not date whites, because Asians are inferior to whites," yes, that is a racist comment. If someone says, "Have you ever noticed that a lot of Asian girls date white guys?," that is NOT a racist comment! It's an observation and a question. (I don't even know if that Asian/white comment is a true observation. It's not something I've encountered myself.) The original poster is not DISAPPROVING of Asians and whites dating, he is just asking if there is an attraction to white males that he's not aware of. He is stating that it seems to be a frequent stereotype that filmmakers use too often. cjfre, do you even know if the original poster is white? He could be an Asian male for all you know.
I am a white man. My neighbor is from Pakistan...his wife is pretty but her cooking smells weird. The guy behind me in line at the store yesterday was hispanic...I didn't like the profanity on the front of his shirt. The guy who aggressively cut me off in traffic last week was white...he had a sticker on his car supporting a band that I like, but I still gave him the finger. The teller at my bank is black...she is rarely in a good mood. Maybe she doesn't like white men, maybe she is just a grumpy person by nature. My best friend is from Spain...I tease him because he likes Barry Manilow. I ask him why he doesn't like Placido Domingo, instead. NONE OF THE REMARKS IN THIS PARAGRAPH ARE RACIST COMMENTS.
I live in Texas and I am white. I have talked to people who jumped to the conclusion that I don't like blacks, simply based on my color and my home state. THIS is a racist attitude and is insulting to me. Yes, racism exists, but can we please stop calling EVERYONE a racist and limit that label to the people who really are racist?
"The girl in 'Paper Heart'...oh, she was Asian? Hmm...I didn't even notice. Sorry, I guess I'm not a racist...like YOU!" Puh-leeze. This refusal to recognize race and embrace it and talk about it openly is PERPETUATING RACIAL TENSION. It creates an atmosphere that makes people uptight and nervous. I do not make negative assumptions about people who look different from me. But I do not pretend that we all look alike. I'm white, you're brown, you're black...fine, great, whatever...who remembered to bring the beer? Put on some Prince, and let's play cards.
"What kind of a world do we live in where I can't hate a man unless he's white?" -- Hank Hill
Wow!! Finally someone who is not terrified to speak the truth! I am so sick of all these people pretending they "don't see race." They are lying their asses off and patting themselves on the back for being such a superior person. The hunt for "racists" is becoming the witch trials of our century. It's absurd. Your post is 100% right. All these people yelling "racist" might as well be yelling "witch"!!! The witch trails never went away, people just picked a new subject for their insane accusations.
all you people who are commenting on her race, and how ugly she is need to go get a hobby. We're all human beings, we can at least try to be mature. you shouldn't be judging people on the way they look or act. Everyone's different, so get over yourself and find something better to do with your time than bashing others. At least they're doing something productive with their life. We all inevitably have the same fate, so get over this pretty/ugly, normal/weird *beep* it really doesn't matter.
so i'm an asian girl (well half) and i love white boys. my white boyfriend thinks i'm hotter than him but i don't think so. i also don't think he's "ugly as moe" whatever that means. and most girls i know aren't as shallow as every single guy i know. and the asian girl white guy thing has been going on for a loong time, a lot of my friends are hapa asian/white so its not a trend
it goes like this: asian girls like white boys but asian boys like asian girls so you should change your post to how the poor asian boys cant get asian girls because the white boys are taking them all :)
I think it's because the "average white guy" is the last to pick up on social trends.
I have always been attracted to all women, regardless of ethniticty. Maybe that's because I live in Los Angeles and there are lots of hot babes from every race. I guess if you went somewhere more "white" you see less exotic females.
Now, there are more different kinds of folks everywhere these days, especially in film so it brings more of a curiosity.
Look back when whites and blacks started dating openly, then latinos, etc., etc. Next will probably be Indians or Persian ( which have beautiful women by the way ).
Michael Cera is definitely a very weird, awkward looking guy...but I have to believe that he can get a better looking girl than THAT! I can't imagine anyone wanting to date her, let alone a popular movie star.
JohnnyLoad: "I think it's because the "average white guy" is the last to pick up on social trends."
Uhh...average white guys are the "last to pick up on social trends" based on what? Because there is a lot of Asian/White dating? Your comment is contradictory to the topic of this thread.
Yes, on second thought I want to rephrase what I stated. I now believe the "average" white guy is the first to pick up on social trends. In fact, so much so that the "average" white guy is the pioneer of all the latest craze.
Yeah I see a *beep* of these pairings as well, ESPecially the closer I'm to "the city", literally every second couple is a white guy with an asian chick
I see the opposite as well but not as much/
I wouldn't be surprised if within 25 years at least a quarter of my state population becomes half-asian...
Well, I'm in Korea. Same thing. I hear it has more to do with what's going on downstairs, if you know what I mean. So, even small upgrade is an upgrade. Not to say that all Asian guys are, you know. Because I definitely look at the girls on these guys' arms and think how? But there has to be some of them have the personality to make them attractive. Also, a lot of you are really rude with the whole "this girl is really ugly" thing. I mean, honestly.
