What were the lawyers trying to achieve?

I don't quite understand what the lawyers were hoping to get out of their involvement. Clearly they were charlatans trying to pull some sort of scam, what with their emotive bluster about massive riches to be won, their failure to file a proper claim, and sending the Romanians into Fox's offices without a translator. But what exactly was the nature of the scam? They clearly expended significant resources in international travel and accommodation and lost opportunities from other less risky and difficult work, without doing anything obvious within the film itself to recoup their investment. Any publicity they might have got from the case would not have been particularly flattering. I can only presume the lawyers got paid out (or hoped to get paid out) by Fox behind the scenes to drop their case and send the Romananians on a fool's errand to discourage further efforts on the Romanians' part?

I'm guessing that they were attempting a nuisance lawsuit. they were hoping to get some money in order to make the bad publicity go away.
