Why do screenwriters think kids who misbehave are adorable?

I tried to watch this movie but barely made it a 1/2 hour before the behavior of the kid with the goofy cap and haircut really got annoying. Judging by the mom's reactions and that there were no consequences to such behavior, I guess she thinks it is ok: to flood the yard with soap bubbles, to jump out of the car and run into the woods after a wild animal, to run into the woods for a shortcut, to ignore your mom and go running off in an unfamiliar town to chase a delivery truck... This kid kept running off on his own and I feel like she was yelling "Mason!!" every 10 minutes. I'd hazard a guess that by the end of the movie she said "Mason!!" over 100 times!!There may have been more examples but I had to turn it off. It was unwatchable. I know it is just a movie but I don't think a kid behaving like that is endearing at all.

Yeah, I think about 30 minutes in I started thinking, "You dumb kid" and "God, he's annoying!"

In the kid's defense, his mother was a super buzz kill. Kids want to have fun. And every time he asked to have fun she was super negative, super pessimistic, super cynical and somewhat selfish. She didn't seem to care about what the kid wanted. Only what she wanted. The kid was enthusiastic. She was a big downer.

I thought the kid was sweet. But he needed a haircut bigtime.
