A Great Effort...

I've read through the threads here and they all have valid points. The budget did give the battles a small-scale feel although this was balanced somewhat by the decision to focus on a band of soldiers from one particular Sussex village.

We'd all love to see epic scale battles but as someone else has said, this was for Channel 4.

I loved the way the programmes followed the fortunes of several key characters, none of them holding any political significance...just normal blokes, scared but determined to protect their homes, families and country against particularly hostile invasion. I was caring about these people straight away.

I thought '1066' managed a good mixture of drama, action and humour, and that the script was generally very good indeed. I particularly appreciated the decision to avoid focusing on William and Harold - brave, and it certainly paid off.

Well done to everyone concerned - a very brave and largely successful attempt to bring the military events of that epic year to the small screen. There are a couple of movies in the pipeline dealing with the same theme and it's just a shame that Mr.Hardy and Co. wont be involved with them (as far as I know).

I'm sure any humour found in the series was unintentional like the recreation of the battle of Stamford Bridge

" Come on chaps stop pushing at the back "

I kept expecting the bloke who killed the Viking giant to say :

" They don't like it up 'em king Harold "

The constant warnings of " This drama contains bloody scenes of battle violence " were most unnecessary

I agree with you andyg... a very good effort, the budget aside. The film had me and my kids riveted for the full 3 hours, with many of the facts my son had learnt come to real and bloody life.
I understand for those with a more in depth knowledge of the period there were mistakes but the spirit of the production more than made up for that.

I agree.

Me too.Could have done with a bigger budget though.I'm sure there were more than 23 men at the battle of Stamford Bridge!

Totally agree - I was very pleasantly surprised at how good the show was, and how much I enjoyed it.

I agree. Actually, the budget made it more realistic to me. No men jumping 10 feet in the air, gliding for five minutes.
