Gypsy guitarist

Seems an odd credit - no name?

I was at a disadvantage, watching a press preview in England and the film came without the French subtitles (and no digital fix available). Everyone else left, but I stayed as I reckoned I could pick up the gist - and I assumed this was Django Reinhardt until I saw the credits.

That is the legendary Angelo Debarre, one the finest gypsy guitarists alive today. Here he is playing 'Les Yeux Noirs' with friends at a Reinhardt festival (Angelo is the one standing).

Look for him on youtube. Awesome.

That's the guy playing "the gypsy guitarist". I was querying who the gypsy guitarist was meant to be, if not Django Reinhardt.

Ah! Gotcha. Hmmm ... I suppose it could just be a general representation of Reinhardt. If you're on Facebook, so is Joann Sfar. You could ask him. He's a nice guy and it would certainly be interesting to know.

Thanks for posting that clip, the music was wonderful. I'm going to look for more.

I don't think it was Django because (1) the actor looks absolutely nothing like Django (2) the character kept referring to Django in the third person (OK some people refer to themselves in the third person but it's rare).

Played a little like him, of course.

I used to want to change the world. Now I just want to leave the room with a little dignity.

reply

Maybe it was meant to be Elek Bacsik, a Django soundalike guitarist, who played on most of Gainsbourg's early albums.
