Sorry Guys, I disliked it.

Before you guys start stabbing me, I'd say that I like Johnny Hallyday. He has blue piercing eyes, and despite the fact he is 158 years old, he looks good. A real bada$$. But that's all with that movie. I went there, I paid for it and got sick of it.
It could not grab me, the fight scenes were funny and silly. Especially the final scene in the garbage yard, where "the good guys" started rolling those packs... I guess they were bulletproof. I guess if they were not, the sybolic idea just pass through me like a lighning, without a thunder. I could not get the idea. Bulletproof coats - interesting... Also the play of Hallyday was impressive - like the early Schwarzenegger roles. Minimum dialogue, maximum action - except the last part. Our guy is too old to do action. He can shoot the bicycle and keep it moving without falling...that was not cool idea I think. Something is missing. Very stupid idea.

I could not follow the story very well. Sometimes I missed something from it, because of the lack of sence.

I like the actor Anthony Wong Chau-Sang - I've seen several other movies with him and like them alot, but this one is just crap. Still scenes, reloading, shooting. Most of the Hong Kong movies done with a certain approach have sence, and the scenes, even the unreal one - flying above the water, fighting on a thin bamboo branch have their own philosophical sence, probably even symbol, a refinement. I don't see poetry here (I see such thing in Chow Yun Fat reloading and gunfights), I don't see sence at all- why the heck they chosed that garbage yard, why the hired folks(partners of Hallyday) were not more scary looking, but they looked like idiots? Why Anthony Chau-Sang choosed to play in that movie... Why Johny Hallyday is not riding his byke instead of playing...
I don't felt the sence of honour, that these partners of Hallyday has to show on screen. No 7 samurai impression. No valour. How suddenly they chosed to fight for him, but to listen to their boss? That was stupid, no sence - they did not had the time to know each other, no charisma from Hallyday to them to influence on their sence of honour. An european cook just shows himself, silent most of the time. Hires them - silent. "get down","trust me","i'll be back"- everyone's happy and love it. Then the investigation shows that the bad guy is their own boss. "sorry boss, we're about to leave our asian roots and traditions, we know that you can find us any time and kill us all, but we suddenly decided to help this european guy which we met in... hm, two hours and to stab you in back" The only explanation to that is a jedi mind trick. They were just weak minded. Final result they got killed. And their friends too.

Look guys, no ofense to Johny Hallyday, but see Michael Caine - he came back in Harry Brown, and in Get Carter style he just killed every jerk, but showing on screen that he's old, he's sick, he's slow, he's afraid - because he's human, but he can make the others to be afraid of him anyway!!!!
I think the movie would be great if he (Hallyday's character)was shot to death, or he had to go with a huge ammount of C-4 wearing it like a vest and go to the badguys, just finishing the movie with one cool "Born on 4th jully" explosion and to make the movie one idea better.

I also wonder why there is a such poster like you? If everyone were like you there would be no more great movies.

Concur, I thought he opinion was most valid, even if I disagree in places!

And you are the most idiotic thing the world has seen.

I hope that made you feel better.

Although it's very hard to understand what you're trying to explain more than likely due to language barrier from what i could put into context you had some valid questions regarding the way things played out in the story and with the characters. Give the movie a second go, and pay close attention to everything. I can answer and straighten out every thing you saw as being unexplained or unexplainable. This is one of the best movies I've seen by far.

So if someone doesn't like a film you enjoy, he's an idiot?

reply

Since you've offered to explain, here are some of the TREMENDOUS problems with this film. Some of them were brought up by others, so I'll quote them. Don't be put off by the bluntness of some of these comments. They make very valid points. I genuinely want to hear your defense on this:

"we just had to accept that that George Fong somehow worked out that Costello was an amnesiac."

"The English dialog is delivered so poorly, it is extremely distracting."

"And you can clearly that tell that no one with an in-depth understanding of English saw the script in advance. Even in the very first English scene, the cop introduces herself as "a detective in the serious crimes unit". As opposed to the other crimes they don't take seriously. C'mon man. All the English dialogue is SILLY!"

"The character development was non-existent. You barely care about the murdered family."

"He suffered no signs of memory loss the entire movie and then all of a sudden he forgets everything, including the definition of the word "revenge". That was kind of weak. He might as well have forgotten how to put a shirt on. Would have made as much sense."

"The scripting and editing was overwhelmingly amateur. Example: Final shootout scene. We see Yam take the jacket off. We understand the significance IMMEDIATELY, as anyone with half a brain saw this coming minutes before, but yet we're still in this shot of the F'ING jacket for SEVERAL MORE SECONDS. It's like the filmmaker is constantly trying to say "SEE! SEE THIS COOL THING I DID?! IT'S A TWIST BECAUSE NOW THE GOOD GUY WON'T KNOW ITS HIM!! GET IT? GET IT?! DO YOU GET IT!?!?!?!"

reply

This movie is just dumb. It is so cliched, predictable, et al. The English dialog is delivered so poorly, it is extremely distracting.

The character development was non-existent. You barely care about the murdered family.

There was so much slow motion I felt like I should be eating my popcorn in slow motion.

Then came the line, "what is revenge?" I almost shat myself. It was just awful, awful, awful.

I agree with you.

For me it stared out good but became ridiculous starting with the events in Hong Kong. Then it was dragged out endlessly, fantastically and tediously.

reply

It's ok, good movies are not for everyone.

reply

For people who dislike them, they're not good movies.

I liked this movie, some people did not, regardless, spirit your name is facking EPIC!

reply

Agree this movie was garbage with very little redeeming qualities. It however did make me laugh out loud uncontrollably many times...although i'm not sure if that was done on purpose.

reply

Agreed, this movie was pretty boring and tedious.
Poor story, zero character development, sleep-inducing pacing, and slow motion for the sake of it.

Boycott movies that involve real animal violence! (and their directors too)

I enjoyed it, but I do agree with a lot of the criticism. The people that say stuff like 'good movies are not for everyone' and 'it was funny, but I don't think that was the intention' are just extreme examples of *beep* I honestly just liked the friendship between Johnny Halliday and the hit men. Somehow, I believed it. You would think such a friendship is not possible, but in the end it all came down to the hitmen straight up just liking the guy. They are the best at what they do, but have pretty much been bankrolled by villains throughout their professional careers. I mean George Fung paid the guys to kill his girl because she was sleeping with another man. That is not grounds for murder at all. However, your entire family being wiped out by gunmen is. The more time the hitmen spent with Halliday, the more they liked him, he gave them food, all his money, and just seemed like a good guy genuinely. They also respected him (during the blind fold chamber reloading scene). After Halliday lost his memory, they could have just taken his money and ran, but they stuck it out to the end.

Apology accepted....

I have to jump onto the dislikers bandwagon. I didn't like it. It was very silly and the action was crap. I really liked The Mission trilogy and Election movies, and this one was rather bad. Well, I hope Johnie's other movies are going to be better than this.
