More effective because of Hallyday's dodgy performance?

Johnny Hallyday is, let's face it, not an acting titan, but I found his clumsy performance to be quite endearing, to the point where it was hard to tell if any of it was on purpose, and what, given the memory defect the character has. He also has quite a strange accent, like what someone from Hong Kong or Macau may imagine a French person to sound like, if they hadn't met any.

My only complaint is that they make him out to be this hardened killer, and all the action sequences are essentially driven by the three Triad members.

I thought the end established that he never lost his gun skills or his gunfight awareness, he was just severely hindered by his memory loss. Some people complain about him noticing gunmen in rear view mirrors, but moments like that and him checking the holes in the coat with those on the bodies established him as a man who's had his history with messy gunfights.
