Van Damme is a kickboxer - I doubt if Seagal backed down from the fight because he was scared of Van Damme. Never forget that Seagal is a Master in Aikido - that's not debatable. Van Damme's qualifications are debatable.
I think it boils down to this - why fight, cause injury, then get arrested for screwing the guy up and possibly cause Van Damme permanent irreparable injury? Seagal made the smart choice by walking away - if it really came down to it, Van Damme might have gotten a punch or kick in...and then Seagal would kill him - literally.
A lot has been made of that incident, but I doubt if Van Damme was truly the victor.
Have you seen Van Damme recently? He's still in great shape, while big Steven weights 300+ pounds and can hardly move.
shareIt's a different kind of martial art - you don't have to be in great shape to be an effective practitioner of aikido, and Steve's hands are still lightning fast. IMO it would be more mismatched in Steve's favor now than it was back then.

I am 6'6" and weight 260 pounds. I look skinny compared to Seagal. When he hits the scales I bet its over 300 pounds EASILY.

Seagal still does 10,000 sit ups a day and jogs 7 miles every morning, whereas Van Damme can't even do his own stunts. Seagal would NEVER betray his fans by using stunt doubles.

This narcotic combined with his lightning fast hands of legend...is what makes almost every single fight scene in the DT-DVD catalogue look like Seagal 30 years ago.

Do you understand that how much you weight is not the exclusive factor on how you look? Muscle mass weighs more then fat.
shareI'm 6' 1"-2" and weigh around 200. I'm not fat, but I'm not skinny either and Seagal looks like he's twice my size. I wouldn't really categorize him as fat though. I'd say he's 300 lbs easily.
