Avoid at all costs

A word of advice from someone with extremely low expectations.

If I had read this bit of advice BEFORE I started watching, I would have retained 23 minutes of my life. I gave it a go (I guess because I like all types of movies) and I was struggling from the starter's pistol (sawn off shotgun) but by 22 mins when Peckham Princess walked in (trust me when I say there ARE NO princess's in Peckham) and gave us "Arrrr maaa daaaaaaaaayyyyysssssss" I felt ill. I hung on, desperately, then at 22m.40sec when we were offered " Ya ken *beep* riiiiiggggghghhhhttttttt orrrrfff" I said good night, and went to bed.

Hi Cleric, take it you're from the old neighbourhood as well then? Thought it funny when you said about no princesses in Peckham as I can testify to there being none!

It's always astounded me as to the how unrealistic the portrayal of SE London is in films/TV. As much as I love Only Fools & Horses it's not the Peckham I grew up in, I don't recall cheeky rogue like market traders popping in for a cocktail in a pub. It was/is a place of desperation and poverty. John Sullivan from Peckham? That's either a complete lie or he never returned much after he got his first mansion!

Yeah, I'm from the south side they call PeckNam (love that nickname). And I will be brutally honest and say I'm proud to hail from such a dive and still come out alright! Do you happen to remember a programme called Desmonds? That was pretty authentic. But Keeley "FHM top 100" Hazell just didn't cut it for me.
Enjoy some good movies MrOstrich and respec' um in Peckham LOL

reply

Yeah I remember Desmonds, it even had the sign for Peckham Rye train station in the opening credits.

I grew up on the North Peckham estate (they were scary times), moved to Heaton Road (near Nunhead) in 1982 and finally moved away from there in 1997. Been gravitating further south ever since!

The HR girl at work tries to convince that she lives in Peckham Rye and not Peckham. I told the snotty cow that she's just trying to polish a turd

I'm an American and do not know much about London except the general area of places the football teams play. I think my ignorance allowed me to enjoy the movie more than you guys. I do understand what you are saying. They made a movie set in my town, but was filmed 200 miles away. I kept thinking, "That isn't even close to what this town is like". cheers

First of all I hate this film and have given reasons elsewhere.

I moved to Liverpool in 1969 when I was 12, but born SE London in Brockley. Played footy on Peckham Rye on a Sunday and seem to remember dad driving Peckham way to go and see nan in Camberwell? The whole area seemed very civilised then, so has it turned to s**t now? I'd love to know what Brockley is like now if anyone knows.

reply

Camberwell is a tad better than Peckham (but not by much) with lots of Georgian houses and excellent transport links into the centre of London.

Brockley I'm not too sure about, knew the area but never had many friends from there but it was seemed ok. Don't get back to Peckham really, think the last time was my granddad's funeral and that must have been 15 years ago at least

Thanks MrOstrich. I suppose I'm going to have to take a trip back to Brockley one day and see for myself. Either that or leave my happy childhood memories alone!
