Why did they skip Jimmy Carter

Why did they skip the Carter administration? Now that I type, I realize that they skipped Ford too. Why did they decide to do that?

reply

I lived through the Carter years and wish we all could have skipped them too

I was born in the house my father built

reply

I feel this way with Reagan and both Bushes.

reply

And the 8 years of Obama

reply

Probably because they wanted to get to the Reagan administration and show the final 30 minutes of the movie without having a 3 hour a movie...they had to cut something out.

Probably because the filmmaker felt it wasn't central to the overarching message.. We had to see Obama become president to see how far America has come in this mans lifetime but they can't show every president over 30 years.. There just wasn't time

They could have did a quick scene where Ford was tripping down some steps, and everyone was laughing. Then cut to nutty Jimmy eating his peanuts, and telling reporters he saw a UFO.

reply

If they were going to do that, they would have hired Chevy Chase and Dan Aykroyd (or just show old SNL footage). There was a montage with both the real Carter and Ford, but I think the OP is missing something. They said Cecil Gaines served under 8 presidents, but the film only covered the first 7: Ike, JFK, LBJ, Nixon, Ford, Carter and Reagan. I assume the 8th was George Bush, but he wasn't even mentioned at all.

he reported he saw a UFO..?

damn, another example of where those ET UFO MFers cunningly only reveal themselves to farmers..usually it is corn-farmers in Nebraska, as a radio host here once joked ..

Ford isn't famous. Not sure why they skipped Carter, unless more interesting things happened under Reagan, like getting the black staff's pay increased.

reply

I think it was because for the narrative the most important events occurred up until Nixon. Then they jumped forward to the point where he gets tired of it and wants to retire during Reagan's term.

The filmakers clearly wanted to do nothing more than promote a racial agenda. Since there were few major race related narratives during either the Ford or Carter administrations, their inclusion was unnecessary.

After all, there is no better way to honor a person's contributions, ideas & actions than to ignore virtually every single aspect of their life that doesn't directly relate to their skin color.

You are partly correct but missing the point. This movie shows the evolution of the Civil Rights movement. The movement began in the 50s and lasted primarily until late 60s/1970. After that the 70s saw a stalling of the movement until the last phase came into effect, which was the protesters of the 50s/60s becoming politically active directly. So yes they were skipped over for racial reasons but not due to skin color but because this films intent is to capture the highlights of the Civil Rights movement. After that it is to show how much progress was made in the Butlers lifetime going from a sharecropper to seeing an African-American elected as President. There was not significant civil rights progress made during the Ford and Carter years. I'm sure Reagan was only shown because that was Cecil's final President he served.

reply

Because they did not want to vilify him. So better to just forget he existed.
